Grand Theft Auto V has been out for almost four years, but its online component is still Take-Two‘s big money-maker. In fact, Grand Theft Auto Online just had its best quarter yet.

Take-Two noted today in its earnings report for the first quarter of fiscal year 2018 that Grand Theft Auto Online exceeded net sales expectations and was the single largest contributor to recurrent consumer spending. GTA Online is an open world multiplayer game where you can earn digital cash through playing, which you can then use to buy things likes clothes and cars. But you can also spend real money to pad your virtual wallet.

Grand Theft Auto Online helped to drive Take-Two’s net sales for the quarter to $348.3 million, up 28 percent. A whopping 94 percent of that, $326.2 million, came from back catalog games, mostly Grand Theft Auto V and NBA 2K17.

You know, I wouldn't even be that upset if GTA Online wasn't so lazy and fucking boring.

Who cares if the updates are "free" when all it adds are more overpowered vehicles and the same exact unbalanced PVP missions?

I feel like I'm a pretty hardcore GTA fan and I just can't stomach the game anymore. It's just not fun

What kills me is when people defend it.

They usually say it's how everything stays "free" (it isn't) and that it would split the player base if they did it any other way (Payday 2 proves that's not true at all)

Quite honestly, I would rather pay for DLC expansions than go with the microtransaction nonsense. As is you have to pay around 50 bucks or grind the most boring shit forever just to get access to the basics.

The cost of new stuff in game has inflated insanely since it came out but payouts for stuff haven't really gone up. And they've recently even gotten to a point where if you want to but [expensive thing] you also need to buy [expensive thing] first so you can't even split things between friends the same as you could before anyone.
And spending $20 only gets you 1.25m iirc which is nothing in GTA now, at launch it was enough to get the best car in the game and have some money to spare, now it's not even half of the cost of the fastest car and it's a fraction of the cost of other cool stuff like the Knight Rider car.

If you actually want to buy all if it and not spend literally hundreds of hours grinding, you pretty much don't have an option but to drop the $80 or whatever on the 8.5m shark card and there's tons of impulsive kid who wants everything right then, and older people who don't have the time to grind for that long and just like playing for an hour or two with some friends after a long busy day.

It's sad. There's a system that will get you about a million dollars every two and a half hours, but it's the most mind numbingly boring two and a half hours you're going to play and god help you if you fuck up just one tiny bit of it or someone decides to just jump in a fighter jet or rocket cycle with missiles and fuck your session up.

The cargo missions? Those suck so fucking hard, even doing them in a solo session.

It's not just them, but yeah everything they've done since then has sucked ass. Every mission is basically go across map, pick up thing, go back across map.

The system I was taught is basically this.

1. Buy supplies for Bunker
2. Buy supplies for coke warehouse (or whatever most expensive warehouse you have)
3. Do Headhunter
3. Steal Car for warehouse (beforehand fill warehouse with low and mid range cars so you ONLY get high end cars)
4. Sell car
5. During 20 minute cooldown, do headhunter and steal another car. Do this until you reach 600k
6. Sell weapons
7. Sell drugs

Then you come out with a little over 1,000,000. 700k of which is profit. The problem is that it is the most boring shit ever and high risk if you don't lag yourself into a solo public session.

I honestly can't even imagine how bad it will get. I want to hold out hope that there isn't possibly anything they could possibly sell in a wild west setting like with GTA, but then I think they're just going to go bottom of the barrel and literally EVERYTHING will be for sale and overpriced.

i dunno. red dead redemption sold well enough and was a critial darling, but it wasn't on the level of GTA.

honestly, nothing else rockstar has has been on the level of GTA.

a lot of people say GTA Online will die with RDR2's release, but I actually think it's a possibility that GTA Online will be supported with additions up until GTA VI comes out because it's the golden goose.

Rockstar didn't invent micro transactions. I hate it but when a game like Candy Crush or Clash of Clans makes millions off of a free game, you bet your ass others are gonna take notice. Blame those who spend money on this fucking bullshit, not the business who takes advantage of it.

If I could somehow add micro transactions to my sales, I sell LED lights, you bet your ass I would.

but like, the game was complete dogshit then too.

Believe me, I fucking hate Shark Cards and I refuse to spend a damn cent in them. However, as a business I understand it, I don't like it but I don't blame them when so many are so willing to buy them. If everyone just said no we wouldn't be here, in this pay to win format. Unfortunately, they delivered on their promises of single player DLC. Last gen received all the cars and weapons the Online got and next/current gen got more cars and the Micheal crime bullshit. In their eyes, we got single player DLC. No doubt we expected LatD/BoGT style DLC but we didn't.

And you know what Take Two themselves reaction to this was? It's NOT enough in fact their CEO claimed they're "under monetizing " their userbase.

This just shows the levels of insatiable avarice infecting publishers, no amount is ever enough. That even though they made literally billions of a single game release they want even more.
