I'm playing on an HDTV and it looks like dog shit. I'm not sure if that's because I'm using a Wii U, but it sure seems worse than I remember.

It's been too long since I've used a CRT so I'm not sure if that's much better, but then aren't you missing out on the widescreen? Why would they make something widescreen but not HD? I don't think screens that would be optimal for that setup were ever very common...

There was a time when HD hadn't been invented but widescreen had.

DPI is what truly matters. If you want 480p to look nice y'gotta play on an 18" or less screen.

Yes, but what TVs had those? Early flat panels were really expensive and by the time they started becoming affordable, HD was becoming standard. I don't recall really seeing widescreen CRTs.

when the wii came out, hdtvs were already established and pretty dang cheap though

The reason is that Nintendo exist inside their own isolated bubble and never look outside. They operate on a completely different tech tree to the rest of the world (no really this explains every weird and silly decision Nintendo make) and in theirs, HDMI hadn't become commonplace yet.

hmmm, I don't quite have that but I almost do. I have a flat screen CRT with a widescreen mode. there's a button on the remote to toggle the aspect.
