It always seemed like alot of Chan culture (Such as offensiveness for lulz and whatnot) started out as a joke with the occasional newfriend taking it seriously. Hell even the memes had a logical origin and were never taken seriously unlike today(RIP Pepe 1.0, An Hero) Then they started getting political (Chanology, OWS) and pivoted to the right hard (Going from anti-establishment to pro-authoritarian) will /b/'s decline and /pol/'s rise (Which always seemed like a joke board to me)

I guess im asking where the lulz went. Or are they there and I just got old (oh god no plz..)

I don't know when, exactly. The 'how' of it seems like good ol' fashioned Poe's Law though.

A lot of the original funny people left, and in their wake attracted a bunch of dumb people who don't understand even a tiny bit what irony is

The problem with racist jokes and shit like that in the end is that it's all fun and good until you actually start attracting real racists who think it's a prime opportunity to join in

I think this probably contributed the most to it.

appending the other f-word to the end of basically every adjective or words hamfisted into adjectives likely drove a lot of people away when the joke stopped being funny. 4chan isn't the only place to suffer that kind of problem. people are driven off all kinds of different subreddits because memes take over and then people spam the same stupid shit over and over again.

this is why you've got a lot of subreddits that just straight up ban memes--because if you allow them, the board quickly devolves into nothing but memes and you can no longer have any discussion.
