I host a weekly DnD group, and attend another. There is a guy common to both who is very heavyset.

The sessions I host are typically full-day affairs, running from noon-8pm. We serve a huge luncheon and play for about seven hours, with a 15-20 minute break in the session during a decent stopping point so people can decompress. We keep our house at 70F during these sessions to avoid causing anyone to sweat. I sit next to him because my wife complained about it, so as to make sure nobody else is experiencing this.

This guy shows up smelling okay, but by the later portions of the session he has a strong, sour odor.

I spoke with him about it and he promised to make sure it didn't happen again, but was surprised and noted he uses deodorant and showers, etc. Yet, it persisted. I am confident he took my comments and adjusted his routine; he's an intelligent guy who knows not to ignore that sort of thing.

On the session I don't host, we're only in the same room for 4 hours, and the room is warm (~76F). I do not notice the smell from him there and I sit next to him there as well.

I am at a loss for the cause. Is there something I am missing? Is it ass-sweat from sitting on a chair (the chairs are padded, not hard) for so long?

Anxiety and stress can cause a person's body odor to change, especially if they are already overweight and prone to sweating.

It's probably from being in the same room as your wife.

Probably ass sweat honestly. Also, keep in mind, fatter people have more insulation, so will retain heat more than skinnier people will, and will sweat at a lower temperature.

Source: I used to be really fat.

It is bacteria breaking down proteins. The process itself produces the smell rather than the growth of the bacteria. The more you sweat the more bacteria breaking down acids and the more smell as a result.

It's because he doesn't start sweating immediately. Literally after a while, he starts to sweat, as he starts to sweat the bacteria starts to break down the acids and then that process gives off the smell. He says it happens after a while and not immediately. It must be when he starts to sweat and eventually it leaves a noticeable smell.

is it related? generally higher-fat foods, with accompanying salad that is mostly eaten by my wife and I.

i am at a loss for how to stop this. i can't make the house colder than 70F without making the rest of the group uncomfortable due to the cold. as is one of our guests put on her hoodie, which i felt bad about.

i radiate heat like a motherfucker and could live in a 50F house but i would not do that to others.

i am trying to explore the possibility that it's related to sitting in one place for so many hours

He could be missing a very important spot during showering. A lot of times for big people they don't wash under their folds properly so when they start to sweat the old bacteria smells rank as hell...
