akira kurosawa Never seen anything by Larry Cohen. Absolutely adore Raise the Red Lantern. Seen like 6 Chaplin films and I might be in the minority, but I'm not really a huge fan. Lum posted... No particular order: The 400 Blows is an amazing film. I've seen Jules and Jim and Shoot the Piano Player too which are pretty good. Blue Velvet is my favorite lynch easily. Elephant man is decent, Mulholland Dr and Eraserhead are both very good. Bergman is fantastic. Favorites got to be Fanny and Alexander. But I also love Wild Strawberries, Scenes from a Marriage and Seventh Seal. Also seen Persona, Cries and Whispers, and The Virgin Spring. I own the Apu trilogy, but have yet to see it. Seen Belle De Jour, Viridiana, Un Chien Andalou, and The Exterminating Angel by Bunuel. Spike Jonze. Being John Malkovich is fantastic, Adaptation is very good, Wild Things is extremely underrated. Still haven't seen Her. In one of my lowest moments I went with some friends to see Her really hungover and ending up leaving after 15 minutes and puking in the theater bathroom :/ --- "Conceit, arrogance and egotism are the essentials of patriotism"- Emma Goldman "Wimmy Wham Wham Wozzle!" -Slurms MacKenzie ... I can't really name a lot of directors from memory, but as much of an awkward asshole Quentin Tarantino is, so far a LOT of his movies get me. Especially love Kill Bill, Pulp Fiction, and Django.

Orson Welles is probably my favorite person in all of cinema so he's at the top. 9 other names...in alphabetical order: L'Avventura is one of the 10 or 12 greatest films I've ever seen. La Notte Is also great (sadly I haven't seen L'Eclisse yet) Blow-out is decent, not in the same league imo. Seen like 5 or so films by Fellini not a fan of La Dolce Vita, Amarcord and Nights of Cabiria were alright. 8 1/2 is very good. La Strada is easily my favorite. Huston is very good director. Should see more of his work. Treasure of the Sierra Madre is my favorite for sure. Scorsese is of course a master. Taxi Driver is tops for me Wilder is great. Some Like it Hot and Sunset Blvd are my favs. __aCEr__ posted... And an honorable mention to John Ford. A director I respect more than love. My inclusion of Antonioni was a bit a joke simply because I adore Orson Welles and he HATED Antonioni. Yeah I know, Bergman and Welles hated him. Also Welles Citizen Kane is of course a Masterpiece. Touch of Evil is great. Othello was good. Haven't seen anything else CelestialVoices posted... werner herzog Aguirre is a 10/10 fucking amazing masterpiece. Fitzcarraldo was good, but felt too much like an inferior retread of Aguirre imo. Need to see more of his work. PTA is fantastic. Have seen everything from Boogie Nights to There Will Be Blood. All 4 of those films are great. CelestialVoices posted... jim jarmush, lars von trier, kubrick, 70s coppola, sergio leone, bresson, tarkovsky, aki kaurismaki, aronofsky, coen bros, ozu Only seen Breaking the Waves and Stranger Than Paradise by Von trier/ Jarmusch. Eh. 70s Coppola is a top tier director. Leone... The first 2 MWNN movies are decent. TGTBTU is amazing. Once Upon a time and the West and America are both great films. Pickpocket by Bresson is a great film, also seen Au Hasard Balthazar which was aight. Solaris is one of the greatest films I have ever seen, Stalker is great as well, The Mirror is very good, Andrei Rublev bored the hell out of me. Not a fan of Arnofsky, he's okay I guess. Phantom_Nook posted... Tarantino Tarantino is certainly a great director. Pulp Fiction and Basterds are my favs easily. Reservoir Dogs and Kill Bill, and Django are good too. Spielberg Duel is amazing and underrated Jaws, E.T, Crusade, Minority Report. Great stuff. A.I is good. Raiders is perhaps the most purely entertaining film ever. SPR and SL are good, but I feel overblown and other directors are way better at the serious stuff. Fun spielberg from the 70s to the early 80s is his best, plus early 2000s. --- "Conceit, arrogance and egotism are the essentials of patriotism"- Emma Goldman "Wimmy Wham Wham Wozzle!" -Slurms MacKenzie ... Both already on my long to see list also F For Fake, The Trial (amazing novel) and Chimes at Midnight. I also actually own the Magnificent Ambersons novel, but haven't read it. I almost bought Chimes during the criterion sale, but got Ozu's Good Morning, and Nick Ray's They By Night. And I want to see Gone Girl. Stone: JFK was alright, Platoon was good. De Palma need to see more of his work love what i've seen. Blow Out and Carrie are masterpieces. Scarface is great too. Carpenter: The Thing and Halloween are very good. Assault on Precinct 13 is def my favorite of his work though. Need to see more. Cameron: One of the best pure entertainment directors ever. Terminator and Aliens are him at his best, T2 and The Abyss are good too. god, for herzog I'd honestly recommend just watching literally every non-doc film he did between aguirre and fitzcarraldo. it's an incredible run. i really dig some of his later documentaries too like cave of forgotten dreams, encounters at the end of the world, and happy people: a year in the taiga. also My Best Fiend (about herzog/kinski's relationship) is k e y
I really came around on Balthazar after a second viewing. not sure what clicked but suddenly it just made sense. also, while pickpocket was cool, i'd take A Man Escaped over it any day probably I actually feel the same about Tarkovsky. Stalker was the first one I watched and it completely blew me away. Haven't seen Solaris yet but it's next on my tarkovsky watchlist. Andrei Rublev was also disappointing but I feel like it'll be better next time since I'll know more what I'm getting into. Ivan's Childhood was also surprisingly good i've seen most of LVT's, I loved Breaking the Waves, Dogville, Melancholia, and The Boss of It All was hilarious as far as PTA goes i'd also lump The Master in with the rest of those. inherent vice was a bit iffy for me though i was pretty eh towards jarmusch myself after having just seen STP, but I did really enjoy Night on Earth, and then last year I finally watched Dead Man which was incredible and then went back and watched through all but the most recent 2-3 of his films and Permanent Vacation and loved nearly every single one to death --- ...
