We're siding with due process and innocent until proven guilty as a concept.

And not allowing police officers to make value judgements on how to treat certain suspects because that surely won't snowball anywhere.

The Suffolk County Police Department said they do not tolerate the “roughing up of prisoners” in response to President Trump’s address to police on Long Island on Wednesday, in which the president said cops should treat subjects violently.

“The SCPD has strict rules & procedures relating to the handling of prisoners. Violations of those rules are treated extremely seriously,” the department tweeted.

“As a department, we do not and will not tolerate roughing up of prisoners.”

I don't think it's ok to abuse suspects just because they may have committed a crime, or a certain severity of crime. Abuse is either fine or it isn't.

Nobody ITT has advocated for police roughing up "arrested people" in general.

Some have advocated roughing up MS-13 members though. I don't agree with that either, but that's not my main gripe with this topic.

When someone is arrested, they're a suspect, not a criminal. They haven't been convicted of anything, so in the eyes of the law they're as innocent as any bystander. This is a fundamental concept in civilized society.

What does this have to do with people punching Nazis? If someone wants to go up and punch someone from ms-13 have at it. The gang member won't get my sympathy. Most likely his partner or whoever his station deems most appropriate. It would be an absolute tragedy for sure and I won't discount that in anyway, especially because I appreciate the work police do; it's not an easy job. I won't blame the office for not wanting to lose his life but if they already have the suspect detained what exactly does excessive force accomplish? In no way am I suggesting that police be docile while trying to apprehend a criminal that is fleeing or putting anyone else's life at risk. As for importance of life, it could easily be argued everyone's life is equally important.
