I didn't say the brace it self was, but an 'ar pistol.' That being legal with the brace is a relatively recent change, and good luck finding one. Either way, ridiculous for the stated purpose.

>Good luck finding one
$200 for the entire lower with brace.

You can't buy a pistol length upper alone without it being nfa far as I know

First off, uppers aren't classified as a firearm so they aren't regulated.
Second, it's sold as a pistol upper and its ultimate fate is left to the buyer.

Next you'll try to bullshit me and claim it's hard to get a pistol upper.

Btw, the actual term used for the shotgun you'll want is a 'tactical shotgun'

I've got one. Thing is great. If I was gonna have an indoor gunfight, i'd take it over anything.

They're like $300

You're right I wasn't thinking. All those warnings about how it's the customers responsibility etc etc

It's tricky though. If you have that upper laying around and there's a lower in the same location I think that's a violation

That would be called intent and it's impossible to actually prove unless TC only owns one lower which is a rifle and one upper which is a pistol.

If you're willing to go the extra mile to protect your hearing and keep your head on straight, I'd say the ideal setup is a 9mm handgun with a suppressor and higher grain ammunition.

Or you could go with a shotgun to eliminate the follow-up shot thing altogether. But RIP hearing. I guess shotgun suppressors are a thing but I don't know much about them. Increasing the length of a long arm in close quarters usually isn't a good idea in my book.

Hearing protection really is a big deal. An unsuppressed gunshot indoors is going to cause permanent hearing loss, guaranteed.

Don't use a rifle for home defense, especially in an apartment. Don't want to kill your neighbors.

id work on beefing up on home security before turning to a gun, especially if its your first and especially if youre in an apartment. get extra deadbolts, an alarm system, a proper safe to store valuables, renters insurance ect. that said im mixed on what to actually recommend. a handgun is more versatile, but its still a crap shoot that it wont go through several layers of drywall even factoring in "low penetrating" hallow point rounds. a shotgun as mentioned is bulky and loud as hell, but theres more options to choose from as far as ammo. #6 or 7 1/2 birdshot at 3-5yards will make anyone think twice or you can up that to #4 buckshot for some extra power or magnum loaded #1 shells. theres also special ammo to choose from.

you might also want to consider a taurus judge handgun which is basically a handgun that shoots .410 shotgun shells (preferably 00 buckshot in these) so you have some benefit of a maneuverable handgun with the spread of a shotgun. i know a few people who use one as there goto apartment defense.

if this is youre first gun though then id make sure you have some proper training first. take a handgun class and start on a .22 and work your way up. dont go from 0 to 60.

https://www.sigsauer.com/store/sig-mcx-virtus-pistol.html

There's an example of a 30 round 5.56 or .300BLK pistol according to the ATF.

You can build your own for a lot less than that, but they exist.

Everyone's first gun should be either a Glock 17 or 22. They're reliable and easy to use.

Buy something simple for you first gun.

9mm pistols are accurate and cheaper than larger caliber pistols while typically having a larger magazine capacity.
Less recoil and more control. I spent around $350 for my MRI 9mm. 15 Round magazine full sized pistol. Good for home or car but it's not compact so it's not great for carrying.

What other people are saying about shotguns and rifles are basically good advice from what I can see. Rifles will pass through and are more likely to potentially enter neighbor's homes and a short barrel shotgun is good for home defense.

A shotgun can be showy so you are less likely to need to fire it and if you do the spread makes it easier to hit a target and the shot is not likely to pass through and harm others.

Find a gun show and talk to some vendors. They can help give good info and will have a huge selection but they also want a sale so be aware of that.

Shotguns, even a Judge, are not going to spread in an apartment enough to where you can just shoot at the general direction. You still need to aim spot on.
while this is true, shooting shot out of a rifled shotgun barrel with no choke is going to up the spread pretty dramatically. at 15feet youre probably looking at a 9-12inch wide pattern.
