red_is_ash 07/24/17 1:04:23 AM #1:	I think it is no surprise to anyone that the Saudi's are extremely dependent on oil when it comes to their economy. According to Forbes, "The petroleum sector accounts for roughly 87% of budget revenues, 42% of GDP, and 90% of export earnings." (1) However recently, due to the US production of oil and the advent of alternate energy such as solar, wind and natural gas, the price of a barrel of crude oil has fallen from a high of $156 in 2008 to ~$46 now. (2) The problem is this: Saudi Arabia is dependent on high oil prices to support their government. The Oil prices subsidize many benefits and services for Saudi citizens. For Saudi Arabia, oil needs to be at $80 a barrel to subsidize citizens and pay for services. (3) At that price, Saudi Arabia is not going into debt or burning through foreign exchange reserves. The problem is, Saudi Arabia does not have unlimited cash reserves. If they do not diversify their economy fast enough, they will be unable to provide for their citizens. According to CNBC, if all stays the same, Saudi Arabia will be out of money by August 28, 2018 assuming everything stays the same. (4) Will they survive the turmoil? They don't want to go down like the Iraqi army did a few years ago.
