How do you play a fighting game when you first get it?

Do you play through arcade with every character? Play through story mode with everyone?

Or, do you choose one character from the start and then play with them as much as you can, then rinse and repeat for others?

I like fighters, but can't remember dedicating time to single characters. I would love to get deep into some, but dunno if i should play as everyone at once, or play as individuals.

I'm not a fighting ace by any means but I like to play through the story first. It gives me a preview of what I'm working with. If a character doesn't mesh with me I'll try out the rest of the roster. That's how I settled on Erron Black in mkx for example. Once I felt comfortable with him I started playing characters that I enjoyed fighting against. Rinse and Repeat.

The only fighting game I play is Dead or Alice. I usually play through the story mode first, usually with the girl characters first.

But there isn't a specific character I love more than others. I like them more for their personality, story and looks more than their fighting style.

i have a hard time sticking with one character. always found it drab playing people who can only play with one or two characters

I start with the hottest girls, and work from there. When I find one who has a playstyle I like, I usually focus on them. I'm not good at good fighting games, but I like to have at least 3-5 characters who I can use because I get bored using only 1 character, even though focusing on a single character is better if you are trying to legitimately be a great tournament player.

In Smash Bros, which is all I really play in terms of fighting games, I just test out every character each game, and stick with about 10-20 I like.

This. Then when I get in-game, I mash the buttons like a frightened chimpanzee and hope everything turns out.

(I usually get much better, but after 25+ years of playing fighting games I still default to button mashing on the first go around).

I tend to try a few, though I will start with the one that looks the fastest as that is where I tend to play. Often though, it surprises me who i end up with being good with.

DOA (The original) Started with Kasumi, while I am good with her Lei Fang and Tina ended up being my best.
DOA 2 The reign of Lei Fang Continued
DOA 3 Zack became my best in a change of events!
DOA 4 Kasumi and Lei Fang
DOA 5 I dart between Kasumi, Lei Fang, Marie Rose and Honka

Soul Blade Started with Taki, though Mitsurugi ended up being my best the whole way though the series

Teken Started with Law though Hawrong ended up being my best

MK Started with the Bruce Lee clone (cannot remember his name) in MK 10 I am using the insect woman

Street fighter I tend to go Sakura or Ken

King of fighters Mai, Athena, King with a dash of Iori

Samuri Showdown, Nakaruru

All I can think of for now

I dislike being good with only a few characters. I also make sure I try everyone at least once.

I usually mess around in arcade mode until I find a character I really like, then beat arcade mode a few times with it before moving on to another character. Unless there's reward for beating the arcade with all characters, I don't always bother with that.

If the game has its Story Mode as a single campaign, I do that first. Otherwise, hard to say. Depends on the series, though one pattern I stick to is doing the Fatal Fury team first in any given King of Fighters.

I can get behind that.

Lost twenty straight matches to a friend of mine in college who picked Eddie (in old school Tekken 3) and did nothing but put the palm of his hand on all four face buttons and mash 'em like crazy.

Start with whoever's coolest, but try everyone, then I usually get really good with 2 or 3, and keep another 4 of 5 I'm capable with, in case I'm playing someone shittier at the game

I play about 3 or 4 matches with each character and choose the few I like the most.
