8TB is not a storage size that they've yet to create Blue/"Blue" drives. the easystorage series recently had that change for 4TB drives as people unfortunately found out just last week.
8TB though, that's a different story. WD Blue (and formerly Green) maxes at 6TB. WD Black maxes at 6TB. WD Red and Purple max at 8TB. these are guaranteed to be red. technically nothing should be stopping you from cracking it open and having a fantastic internal 8TB drive. these are 3.5" HDDs, 2.5" hasn't really gotten past 5TB yet. http://www.bestbuy.com/site/wd-easystore-8tb-external-usb-3-0-hard-drive-black/5792401.p?skuId=5792401 but anyway, get 'em before they sell out because they will sell out at that price point. it's a super good deal on storage finally. edit: WD Red proof: https://www.wdc.com/products/internal-storage.html and if you DO intend to take it out of the case you have to be careful. there's a certain process for it, it ain't a simple unscrew and done. can post more on that later if anybody's doing that, there's a pdf that explains it all. --- "Maybe it's a tentacle, molesting the planet itself. - Aschen Brodel. ... I'm building a PC soon so I might wanna use that as an internal secondary drive for it.
Now on the one hand 8GB seems like super overkill on the other that seems like a really good deal --- No problem! This is a cute and pop genocide of love! ... Copied to Clipboard!

technically there have been cheaper 8TB drives before. Seagate's for example.
but i am not trusting a Seagate 8TB external with a 1 year warranty. no fucking way. there's a model with 2 years and i'm still not trusting that. there's a line to draw and Seagate 8TB is one of them, and i say that while having a 2TB Seagate working in my computer for 7 years and still passing every health check. that's just a level of storage where i really, really need to make sure i ain't taking the biggest risk and that's WD Red or Black. the one here's their 2nd best class they got and meant for storage that's available 24/7. the warranty on these is 2 years, though WD Reds otherwise are 3. they keep it low because Blues are a thing, those are normally 2 i think. but they run the risk of getting some repackaged Greens, which were phased out. worst case you keep it external for now. if you wanna change that, you can. and there's some reliable brands out there too, like HGST. that can be nice at high levels but they are never cheap. --- "Maybe it's a tentacle, molesting the planet itself. - Aschen Brodel. ... Yeah some dude who used to do IT for a local insurance place got 5 1TB Seagates to do backups for their server a bit over a year ago
3/5 of them have already failed. I know well enough not to trust them. The WD ones have seemed decent at least in my experience. The only reason I'm not jumping on this is 8TB is rather overkill for my needs-- I'm making do with 1TB in my current PC and while I could be a bit more liberal with what I keep around, even going nuts I doubt I could break 4TB very easily. The 4TB is on sale too but it's not as impressive a deal so a bit less tempted. --- No problem! This is a cute and pop genocide of love! ... Copied to Clipboard!

I am super anal about aesthetics. (and I think the transfer rate would be a bit faster than even USB 3.1, but that's more minor)

a big reason to take it out is because internal SATA drive >> USB. like if you just want storage and want to regularly access it, having it inside your machine makes perfect sense.

it's now on their ebay store too.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/WD-easystore-8TB-External-USB-3-0-Hard-Drive-Black-/322556215908?hash=item4b19d94264 you do still pay tax if you're in a taxable state, that hasn't changed. what does is ebay bucks. some people get 8% cashback offers going on there right now. if you're one of those people, easy way to sweeten the deal. --- "Maybe it's a tentacle, molesting the planet itself. - Aschen Brodel. ... I mean it's only a 5400 RPM drive, so realistically you're not gonna come close to maxing SATA III or USB 3 throughput.

In theory that's true. In practice I think it's a bit more complicated than that because I'm pretty sure the USB protocol still isn't as optimized as a straight SATA connection so you're going to have some overhead there that you can avoid by going internal.
That being said with USB 3 the difference is fairly small regardless, you're right about that, and for me it's mostly aesthetics and lowering bumping risks. --- No problem! This is a cute and pop genocide of love! ... Copied to Clipboard!

my previous seagate 3TB died after 3 years and i saw another on sale for $80 that i was going to jump on but this is making me rethink that a bit. though i will probably stick with the seagate still, there's no tax on that and it'd probably take me a decade to fill an 8TB.

one i just picked up turns out to be the WD80EFAX. it's not just a WD Red, it's the WD Red made in Thailand with a 256MB cache. --- "Maybe it's a tentacle, molesting the planet itself. - Aschen Brodel. ... Copied to Clipboard!

run crystal disk info or something like that to see what drive you specifically got.
if the box says made in thailand, you should have the same thing i do with that 256MB cache. if it says china or taiwan, it's probably 128MB. which is still pretty great. --- "Maybe it's a tentacle, molesting the planet itself. - Aschen Brodel. ... Copied to Clipboard!

should be yeah. 8TB is just the one where people buy these because it's a LOT cheaper than buying the internal ones outright. for some reason external drives are like $100 less despite being the same damn thing.

I think I'm going to order a second one of these and use it as an actual external backup drive. My 1TB external isn't cutting it anymore and I don't really like to be without a backup. >_>

either or.
they have the durability to be 24/7 drives for years but if you don't use 'em that way it's not like it's going to hurt them. thing is at 8GB+ there are very few techniques available for widespread usage so you're guaranteed these top notch drives. --- "Maybe it's a tentacle, molesting the planet itself. - Aschen Brodel. ...
