Stay away from the 'so what do you do for a living' stuff because most ppl don;t want to talk about work on their downtime. Throw in things like last book they read or movie and if you haven't seen it, ask them to give you a spoiler free rundown. then move onto crap like 'I'm new around here, any decent places to eat in the area' blah blah etc. and just watch for when they say something that excites them and ask follow up questions. With that said, I personally prefer the majority of my conversations to go as quickly as possible. If I'm really interested in making an acquaintance and trying to give friendship a chance, I'm okay with it. Because then, it's not superficial.
