Primary care makes around $200,000 after their residency. Surgeons and other specialists, 300-500+ During residency (3-6 years after med school), you're paid ~$50,000 for ~80/hr weeks but that's still a part of your training. Moonlighting is when a resident picks up a shift at an urgent care or something on the side during a day off to make more than that meager resident salary, but less than a typical attending physician, because they're at least licensed/trained enough to handle that kind of work. edit: So to answer your student loan question, depends on the person. Live like a student for several years after your training and a six figure salary can aggressively pay off student loans.
