So what's the effective wage after subtracting student loans?

Depends on specialty and location.

Primary care makes around $200,000 after their residency. Surgeons and other specialists, 300-500+

During residency (3-6 years after med school), you're paid ~$50,000 for ~80/hr weeks but that's still a part of your training.

Moonlighting is when a resident picks up a shift at an urgent care or something on the side during a day off to make more than that meager resident salary, but less than a typical attending physician, because they're at least licensed/trained enough to handle that kind of work.

edit: So to answer your student loan question, depends on the person. Live like a student for several years after your training and a six figure salary can aggressively pay off student loans. If you raise your standards of living immediately after training, it can take 10-20 years to pay it off.

Technically if you've completed an intern year and USMLE Step 3, you're fully licensed to practice medicine. Some physicians don't even finish residency - but that's a really risky thing to do because a lot of places won't hire people who aren't board certified.

I've always seen on TV shows that moonlighting is frowned upon or not allowed. Any truth to that?

Also, if you're making the money can I be the stay at home dad?

It's allowable by ACGME rules as long as it doesn't add up to the resident working more than 80 hours per week. Some residency programs don't allow it within their own rules, though. Mine allows "internal" moonlighting at the same hospital we work at with our resident wards teams.

Also I'd rather rip my arm off and **** myself with the bloody stump than marry you.

Oh so you'll set up a date with me to watch Squaders trial but won't be a working mom for me. :(

And back to the topic, okay, didn't know that. Makes sense though.

Xsquader isn't having a trial. He's having a one-man psychiatric meltdown performance in a courtroom.
