I'm glad I get overtime. So many ancillary issues to sort out, not enough time in a day. This network move is getting closer and closer to being complete. Still need to bring in the last 3 service providers.

I used to work in a law firm some years ago

I did do some crazy weeks where I had 80+ hours and had to come in on weekends and work all day saturday and sunday and then come back monday morning and get screamed at if I got in 1 minute past 9 AM

Problem is I was on a fixed salary of 350 $ per week and did not get a penny more for overtime

It sucked balls

I just plain wouldn't agree to work those conditions. Time is more important to me.

They aren't necessarily conditions... Most of it is voluntary because I'm trying to get a ton of stuff done per day. I could technically come in at 8 and leave at 5, but then I'd have to push a lot more stuff off to the next day.

You don't have to make excuses, most people on this board don't understand careers and hard work that goes into them.

Well in my case after being a lawyer for many years and realizing that I was making less money than someone flipping burgers at McDonald's, I decided to completely re-orient my life and get into engineering

Or they understand the greater importance of not living to work. Unless I'm working for myself and building something I own, I would never be cool with slogging away all those hours for someone else's company. You've got to be brainwashed if you can't understand why people wouldn't want that.

I mean... I get that, but... I view this whole corporate network move project as a challenge. If I complete it successfully, I'll always be able to tell prospective employers that "I designed, implemented, and administered the corporate network infrastructure for company A at this building, that building, and that building." It's a huge feather in the cap, per se, so I'm trying to make sure stuff gets done.

Once we get the network move fully completed and things are running smoothly, I'll be back to working ~45 hours per week like normal. There's just a ton of stuff that needs to get done at the moment. I haven't had a day off since the sunday before last, and I've mostly been working 12 - 16 hour days. It has been crazy, and I'm pretty exhausted.

However, it's pretty rewarding that we're even at this point.

If it's for you, it's for you. I'm talking personally. My mother beat that into me with the long hours she would work for accounting and stuff and said it's not worth it if you aren't working for yourself. She's mich happier doing commercial real estate with her Broker's license now and she still works a lot of hours. It's just that she gets to see the profit of it.

But at least you're getting paid for the extra hours, I guess so that's something.

working that much for a short time isnt the end of the world, especially since TC is getting OT for it

but yeah if that was anywhere near a "normal" week It'd be pretty wack. But temporarily pouring your time(especially time that you're being well compensated for) into a project that looks good on a resume is just a win/win if you can physically devote that kind of time and energy w/o causing massive issues elsewhere in your life.

I can attest. This sounds like a huge project that you'll be able to go into great detail about in future interviews. I have a few projects like that under my belt and they've helped me impress employers immensely.

Just remember, it won't always be this way. I was working killer hours as a system administrator. Leading all sorts of projects, handling day to day requests and maintenance on tons of systems. Back in May I was able to move up to a Data Center Engineer position. Now I'm responsible for only a couple systems, no more ticket system requests, I work from home whenever I want, and spend my day doing research and monitoring the alerts on the data center hardware. I get paid a lot more for doing less. Keep building up the resume and getting the Cisco certs. You'll advance to easy street in no time.

Yeah short time periods are okay, especially if you have a project based job. It just shouldn't be an expectation and looked down upon if you don't want to do it all the time. At least Cable's getting PTO. Plenty of places that expect that but don't give out PTO.
