I just finished Med school.... I love the science behind health care and like caring for people but the last few years were horrible we barely had time to do anything that wasn't sleeping and work/school related. I put on 30 lbs and lost a lot of muscle mass since I am weaker at 27 that I was at 17 at this point. I also felt that I missed a lot of games, movies tv shows I wanted to see. I also wanted to go to Japan and Europe, see old friends that I only saw once a year while in school...

I also won the lotto which helped me pay for my school loans and I have enough money to live unemployed for 2 years.

I want to take a full year off. Med school was so draining I desperately want to rest.

So in other words, you're not really a physician and you didn't really go to medical school. No physicians get jobs right out of medical school, they complete a residency, which is merely another few years (depending on what field you want to go into) of learning.

If you're going to lie, at least do your research first.

I's implied you have completed residence and fellowship when you say you completed med school since it is a requirement to get your license. stop being paranoid

I just want to know if I may have a problem getting a job back if I leave for a year instead of going straight to work

why would we know that

do you think there are a lot of physicians on here? lol

ask a job counselor or academic advisor or perhaps a professor you had at your college what they think.

This. Utilize your university's resources. Nothing wrong with taking a gap year in general.

Good idea @Jen0125 I will also check on any forum for physicians besides asking a counselor.

I love the science behind health care but they treat us like machies

i mean i don't see why you wouldn't be able to get a job. it may make you less competitive but you still have all the education. i'd just maybe still volunteer at a hospital or something while you're doing your gap year so you aren't totally out of the game by the time you start applying and you can still network.

Say something like you wanted to travel. But be prepared with stories about how your year enriched yourself. It doesn't necessarily need to be education related, but it really should be enriching regardless.

yeah you could even volunteer for health organizations in other countries to travel while still gaining experience. and that doesn't need to be your whole year. you could do it for maybe a month here... come home relax.. do it again somewhere else for a while.

idk how those operations work but if you have the skills it would be something you could do to help people while traveling and still having a chance to relax.

I thought about med school but I always second guess myself so I wouldn't be able to properly diagnose.

That's okay. All doctors are just practicing.

So is being a physician like your dream and you lie about it all the time, or is this your first time?

Actually that's a good thing. The minute you stop second guessing yourself is the minute you should quit medicine. Never become too comfortable, that's when mistakes are made.

Have a good reason for the sabbatical when you come back. Don't tell them "I felt like taking a year off." Say something like you wanted to travel. But be prepared with stories about how your year enriched yourself. It doesn't necessarily need to be education related, but it really should be enriching regardless.

I felt like playing games and getting gains probably isn't a good answer.

A year to work on myself both mentally and physically, to recouperate after the decade I went through in order to get to this point while continuing expanding my knowledge of health care via...

Is a better statement.

@Zangulus

Thanks a lot for the tip man. I agrees people who have the final word when it comes to hiring today are baby boomers who seem to thing the only thing that matter in life is work
