No. It's no where near the worst mechanic.

Nah. It's fun if the game is non-linear and lets you use it as a solution.

The hacking minigame in Fallout 3 was pretty fun.

Cid is the best mechanic. Not sure who the worst is.

Depends how it's implemented.

During battle, with stupidly low random chance of success (ala Final Fantasy's "Steal")? Fuck that.

Out of battle, with chance of success based on skill level and detection (ala Elder Scrolls)? That's fine, and I actually kind of enjoy it.

The first time I played Morrowind, and saw you could pickpocket, rob, break/enter and steal, and make a career out of it, I was immediately sold that it would be one of the greatest game experiences of all time. And I was right. Logged about 1,000+ hours into that game over the period of 2 years.

No game since then has gotten those mechanics correct, even the later Elder Scrolls games after Morrowind. Oblivion was so dumbed down that they wouldn't let you offload goods without a fence, which forced you to play through the story.

We need more games with ultimate freedom. What made Morrowind so good, was that you could get off the boat, and go straight to Dagoth-Ur to try and beat the game if you wanted to. You obviously had to level your character to beat the guy (minus a couple of items you had to acquire) but you truly could level your character ANY way you wanted.

I wish they'd re-do Morrowind on the Skyrim engine and re-release it. I'd gladly pay $60 for that.

Although, it looks like it's not available to the public anymore because of stability issues, and the last dev update was over a year ago. :/

I 100% agree with you. I remember stealing a whole bunch of shit in Morrowind and yet it's not the same in the newer Bethesda games.

The worst part about "during battle" steal is that I always felt like I needed that character to be stealing all of the time in order to not miss things. It makes battles feel even more like a chore.

I believe FFX had a 100% chance for the first steal and it drops by half every time.

Was pretty cool.
