All the buzz about the new Spider-Man movie made me nostalgic about the first two Tobey Maguire ones, so I decided to rewatch the first one last night. Last time I saw it was in first grade, so obviously it was a lot cheesier than I remembered, but it was still a really fun movie to watch, even though I generally don't particularly care for superhero movies.

I'll probably rewatch the second one this weekend.

I don't care for the Raining Spider-man movies. They were good for their time, but they have so many flaws.

Spiderman-Man Homecoming is where the Spidey action is at.

Few films have no flaws. What are the "many flaws" it had?

I liked 2 quite a lot but even at release it had very little that really set it apart.

There's plenty to be said for good execution, as it's impossible to have a good film without it but it's firmly in the "good not great" category for lack of new ideas.

Long story short, it had all been done before.

I've always felt that Toby's Peter Parker was just an unlikable character. I remember walking out of the first movie at 13 and being pretty disappointed.

I haven't watched a Raimi Spider-Man movie since I saw 3 in theaters. It was so bad, it ruined the entire trilogy for me. Homecoming was amazing.

I can understand why people hate Tobey Maguire as Spiderman, but I think its a nearly perfect casting for the character.

I disagree. I can't think of another superhero movie back then that had that much heart. It also had that fun 60's comic vibe that is still pretty unique.

Raimi's casting was so fucking on point outside of 2-3 characters

I really hope they bring back JK Simmons as JJJ, I just don't see anyone else doing it

He was kinda okay as Peter but I felt his Spidey was a bit dry. That's probably more on the writers' fault though, because it seems they tried to make Spidey more serious with fewer quips. I'll agree that J.K. Simmons was just fucking perfect as J. Jonah Jameson though.

I really liked Tobey's Peter. He was a socially awkward nerd. A spider bite didn't give him confidence. He was still a dweeb. You really are the struggle he has being both Peter and Spidey. He was a sincere and good natured character.

If he gained quippy confidence in the Spidey suit he'd be close to perfect for me.

Andrew Garfield then? Yeah, the roles are pretty much reversed there. He didn't make a believable Peter Parker at all, but his Spider-Man was good.

I like Tom Holland's Peter but I feel like he's still a cool ass kid everyone would like to be in high school. He has one friends but yet all the girls seem to have major crushes on him and he's a very witty and charming kid. He gets to hang out with Tony Stark.

The struggle with being Peter wasn't quite there yet. He ditches moments to be with Liz and that's about the extent of it. He has no real consequences for ditching school. He prefers being Spider-man but being Peter ain't bad either.

In comparison Tobey's Peter felt alone. He lived in a shitty apartment and everyone just acts like a douche to him outside of May, MJ and Harry. People recognize he's clever but nobody really gives him the time of day. In Spidey 2 when he doesn't want to be Spider-man anymore you can totally understand why.

Now both of them are accurate depictions of the character. Holland is really similar to Ultimate Spider-man in particular. But I find the Tobey just a lot more real and relatable. He never got to secretly hang out with Tony and got cool gadgets as presents. He had to have a lonely crush on Mary Jane for a really long time.
