The content and community is different on /r/medicalschool than it is on /r/rockclimbing than it is on /r/motorcycles. Smaller, more topic-based subreddits generally cater to good discussion. Moderated subreddits based on expertise like /r/AskScience and /r/AskHistorians usually provide extensive, well-thought and cited posts and eliminate layperson conjecture. I imagine most people who criticize reddit post on frontpage default subs once they've already made the frontpage and feel there is no "discussion", just circle jerking. That's probably the worst way to use reddit and I don't blame you for having that opinion if that were the case. Once I got rid of the meme-y frontpage subreddits and avoid some of the larger, more popular subreddits my experience got way better. Also reddit is terrible for politics by design, and I imagine a lot of the more heated political posters on here probably don't like it too much.
