Back in the day it was about dudes getting some land or some shit, but now weddings are described as the happiest day of the bride's life and her family forks over thousands of bucks to have one happy day.

how did we come so far?

The wedding industry and their brilliant marketing. If the wedding was about the man, very little would be spent. You make it about the woman and she has an excuse to spend your entire fortune.

Traditionally the woman or her family pays for the wedding.

In Thailand/China, it's the other way around. The man pays the woman's family and for the wedding. Some couples will take out loans from the bank for tens of thousands of dollars to pay the dowry (sin sot) to the woman's family. This was one thing I was adamant with my wife about when we started dating. Told her I would never pay a dowry, her family didn't even want it. Tends to be more popular with northern/Northeastern parts of the country where they tend to be much poorer.

Depends on the tradition and if the in-laws have money.

In my case, I paid for everything. Luckily, I spent way below the industry average.
