It was my favorite movie as a kid. Can't say it held up but definitely better than black fish. Anyways if it was a true story what would have happened?

Guys tried to kill Willie. That's insurance fraud.

People stole Willie to free him. Is that theft given the circumstances that he was gonna die?

What about driving the whale through town. I would assume that's against the law but exigent circumstances?

Driving towards those guys and through the marina gate?

Now back to. The guys that tried to kill him they had boats out with nets to recatch him. Once he hit the water was he free again? Can they recatch him? Are there laws about that? Especially given they didn't have a way to transport him or cage him once they caught him.

Is releasing Willie into the marina illegal?

The guys that were trying to kill him grabbed the kids and the trainers trying to save him is that assault or were they acting in defense of their property.

Pretending the movie really happened what happens to these people in the years following the closing scene?

Well I mean they were both about treatment of orcas and I know black fish is a documentary and I always thought a movie that used an orca in captivity to talk about freeing an orca in captivity was weird but free willy was enjoyable and black fish was preachy.

It wasn't. They had problems training it as it had been captured to old to tame. Also his family was waiting for him in the ocean and they talked to him every night. Stop trying to kill my childhood.

Completely unrelated note, we just re-watched Beetlejuice and I didn't realize/remember that Beetlejuice realistically had a rather minor role given the fact that he's the title character >_>.

The only people who committed an actual crime were the guys who freed willy. The insurance fraud folks may have wanted to commit a crime but never did.

Additionally, willy was likely tagged and might be euthanized by animal control forces since it's upbringing would mean it may come back to shores and that's a public danger.

Insurance fraud is a crime. Conspiracy to commit insurance fraud is a crime. Animal cruelty is a crime. I'm sure they commited tons of crimes...

Now the question becomes is this theft. I know in CA you can bust someone's window to save a dog in a hot car. I feel like this is comparable.

Also he was raised wild and was communicating with a pod he wanted to get back to. He wasn't in captivity long.

That's a dumb bird. They're nice to humans usually especially when. They're not in tiny cages. I like to think game recognize game and that's why we're chill with the orcas.

While he did resume contact with humans and eventually die of pneumonia, he lived a much better life in the ocean and had he continued living in captivity he would definitely have died much sooner of a papilloma virus which he quickly recovered from upon release.
