I guess that combination just makes "black" now...

i think he CAN do it, but its obvious he mostly got the role because they needed more store power in the cast.

Wait, are people going to just ignore the fact that she's Indian and white? I know a few people mentioned it itt, but seems like a lot of users are unintentionally overlooking this. TC made the biggest spin-asspull move I've ever seen on this site. How white plus indian = black makes any amount of sense is one of the most mind boggling statements I've read in my entire life.

To be fair, who could really replicate Robin Williams as Genie? Honestly when they started making live action versions of their old movies I really hoped they'd stay away from Aladdin because of this.

But honestly, Will Smith isn't a bad choice imo. No one can really capture Williams' eccentric personality anyway, but I think Smith can put his own little spin on it. Would have preferred Eddie Murphy or something like that, he was good in Mulan and was kinda a similar character there.

I'm not a great judge of casting, but I think someone like Jo Koy could've been a decent Genie. But he would be a relative no-name compared to Smith. I think he'd give the more energetic performance you'd expect from Genie.

The number one mistake everyone will make going into this movie is expecting a Robin Williams clone performance of the genie....don't do that. Don't hold Will Smith's performance to THAT standard or expect it to be EXACTLY like that...Much like the Joker...the Genie has a personality, but there was only one Robin Williams. Expect WIll's version of the Genie's personality, not Robin's performance.

Exactly. Robin's performance was basically Robin acting as himself. No one really has that kind of eccentric personality he brought. No one. Absolutely no one can pull that style off the way he did. I'd rather them try to go in a different direction that try to replicate something that can't be replicated.

I don't mind Will Smith as Genie, at least enough too give him the benefit of the doubt. Casting an actress of Indian descent as Jasmine makes sense - in the Broadway show they added a lot of sort of "Indian" influence to flesh out the routines, like Bollywood style dances etc. Obviously Agrabah is supposed to be located somewhere around Pakistan/Kashmir/India.

The guy playing Aladdin looks really young. I felt they were supposed to be the same age or he was older than Jasmine. Hopefthat's just a poor picture...?

Will Smith as Genie is fine if you want Will Smith in your movie. He's capable of being funny and working in the part, it just won't be largely different from other characters he's played in the past. I feel it's fine though.

I know what it means, but generic things still have an origin. Like a generic Egyptian city would probably just be based on Cairo.
