The one I have is a Philips and it's great, I have no problems with it whatsoever. It has 3 HDMI ports, the port for a TV antenna (I don't have cable), and isn't a Smart TV so it doesn't give me problems with showing me advertisements and stuff lol

However now I can get a bigger and better one. Should I spring for 1080?

Its 2017. 4k TVs start at $299. You can find 1080ps at like $99.

When would I benefit from 4k? I just have a Switch and my wifi sucks anyway so it's not like I'd set Netflix or whatever to it

All good newer TVs are 4k, so while you can still buy a 1080 tv you might as well spend a few dollars more for a better quality set.
