i accidentally shot her during a bout of stealth archery (so original i know) and it instakilled her...

i could have sworn she was flagged as essential.

any other followers i should be worried about?

It's been many years, but I think she was either never essential, or lost her essential flag once you "own" her and she's your follower.

Edit: I never used her, just locked her in my house, but a few of my friends did. One night, one of them couldn't find Lydia so he backtracked through dungeons, starting with the last one he finished and working back. Found her, like, 16 caves and dungeons back, skewered in a spike trap. The kicker, not only had he told her to stay in his house so she wouldn't die, but this dungeon was over two real life days ago based on save times.

He was pissed. I almost pissed myself laughing at him. Good times.

i've never been worried about her in a fight.

who's a good stealthy companion?

if I remember correctly it's impossible for enemies to kill her, and only you can kill her

of course i kill my companion on the one playthrough i decide to actually use companions...

oh well.

Followers can be killed by enemies, but they usually are ignored by them once they kneel out of combat (for instance, stray attacks from an enemy that hit a kneeling follower can still kill them).

So basically, only on the highest difficulty is the only time it's an issue, same as new vegas.
