I met my current girlfriend online. She was from California and i'm in Boston. Grinded it out for 10 months until she was finally able to move here to be with me.

SO worth it.

I'm drawing a distinction here between online and long distance (although it would take a lot for me to consider a long distance relationship as well).

Online relationships are pointless and stupid. If there is no chance of ever physically meeting then it is a waste of time.

I did the whole long distance relationship thing and it worked for me. We'd spend half the year apart and did that for nearly 2 years. We've now been married and living together for 14 months.
