Just them going down a laundry list of why you are unqualified and how you could possibly think you even made a good candidate in your own mind.

And then you get up to leave or object and they're like "Let me finish," or "You don't want to hear this?" as if their commentary is going to make you a better person.

And you're like "Fuck no I don't want to hear this, I just want to leave. I get it, you think I'm shit," in your own mind but you keep it to yourself and stay anyway because you were taught never to burn any bridges even though the bridge is being dismantled in front of your eyes anyway...

It happened to me when I tried to apply for an IT job and the interview just felt like a big middle finger to try to get me off my high horse.

You should have asked them why they even brought you in for the interview if they don't think you're qualified enough

(don't actually do this, but I've been tempted to do so on many interviews)

Do they really bring people in for an interview who they believe are unqualified? Haven't done enough interviews to know.

yes?

i've never had an interview with anyone who just brought me in there to insult me the whole time. why would they waste their own time when they're trying to find someone to work at their company?

I've never really been directly berated by an interviewer, but I've had them ask about my qualifications and sound totally unimpressed. Most job postings have an unrealistic set of expectations, so it's only natural that they have to interview candidates who might not meet them all, but it's annoying when they ask like five questions in a row about things that are clearly not on my resume

I mean yeah... But it just seems like a weird oddly specific story to make up

I think that's his point... that this story isn't weird enough to have a reason to be made up. I don't think he meant "weird" as in outlandish, but "weird" as in inexplicably mundane to be falsified.

But I've seen plenty of people on PotD who seem like pathological liars so it's still possible this is all bullshit

idk it just doesn't really seem at all likely to me that an interviewer would waste their time scheduling an interview with someone they want to "brow beat" and "lecture" about being unqualified for the position they applied for when they could be using that time to interview actual qualified applicants for the position.. you know.. the actual function of the interviewer.

I find the best way to get through interviews is by using mannerisms that most politicians use.

Deflect, digress, deflect, digress. Use big words to essentially explain nothing. Never be honest or humble.

Not weird as in the subject matter, but weird as in why would you make up such a mundane and specific story. Its like me saying making up a story that I had frosted flakes for beakfast this morning and that they were stale.

The part that seems unrealistic to me is that he implied this was in-person. This seems like the kind of shit they would figure out in a phone interview. But not everyone does phone interviews, right? For all the jobs I've applied for, they have them, but I imagine in some industries they aren't necessary

I hear it's a crapshoot in the IT field though, and most applications you fill out are going to ask for the veteran coding master, and you have to just ignore half the list.

Yeah, like 80% of software job postings I see supposedly require you to know like 8 languages and 5 front-end frameworks. I'm interested in the software field but I'm not really super experienced with it, so I'm always wondering if your average "experienced" software engineer actually knows all that shit or if the postings are complete bullshit

Its an IT interview so maybe they had a lot of candidates lying on their resumes and they snapped.

Like its a javascript position and people have it on their resumes but no one actually knows it.

Were you being interviewed by more than one person? Maybe the person who berated you didn't really want to be involved in searching for a new worker.

If only one person interviewed you, it does seem strange that they would bring you in if they thought you were that bad.

It was two people. One guy was relatively cordial but the other dude just sat there with this curious look on his face. Every so often he'd barge into the conversation to ask me a tech question until the end when he just cut off the interview and explained that I won't be working for them because I'm completely novice.

Honestly, this is true. I work in a much better IT job now than that would have been but I still reflect on it because I constantly stress over whether or not I've actually gotten better in the years since.

i've had this happen too. I've brought this up on this site too, almost all the other posters said they've never experienced this and thought i might have been lying about it.
