I have 2 older silblings and to put it blunty, 1 of them is ghetto as hell (college dropout, lives in the hood, speaks ebonics even though none of us do) while my other siblings is more of a geek like me. The thing is, they both have toddlers a year apart and it's reeeeaaaaally eye-opening seeing them both together this summer...

my upper class niece is a year younger than my nephew from the ghetto and she seems about 2 years smarter...

she can play 2 different instruments (recorder and 3 string guitar), she uses adult coloring books with mandalas in them while my nephew can't even color inside the lines yet, her vocabulary is about twice as good as his, and she's even better at videogames (I let her play New Super Mario Bros and she caught on so much faster than he did)

I actually used to tease my bro about spoiling his kid (buying her expensive learning toys every week, classical music in the womb, always spending a long time to explain why they're disciplining her instead of just getting it over with, etc.) but GODDAMN when you see the results it's as clear as day

Misread, sorry.
But basically it's not a poor/middle class thing.
It's a good parenting thing.
I've seen terrible people from good backgrounds solely on the basis their parents are terrible. Likewise, I've seen good parents in bad backgrounds.

Blame the parents.

hey man I don't spend a lot of time around toddlers so seeing such a direct comparison has been helpful

This is kinda why I'm glad my mom got sole custody of me. I'd be dumb as a box of rocks if my dad had raised me.

Kinda, my sister has three kids.

One who spent more time with my sister and mother is in 2nd grade at the top of he class playing a few sports.

Another who's starting kindergarten next year and spent most of her time with him still can't even speak correctly. It makes me sad tbh.

That may be true when it comes to parents. When it comes to culture and school though, I imagine we can all agree that ghetto children typically fare worse.

I... may disagree - in America sure, because the funding for public schools in poor areas are terrible.
In Ireland, not so much. It honestly depends on the kids and the parents themselves. I was in a poor area and school and was fine. Some of the kids never should have been allowed do anything but grow up in a prison imo, but well, people make life what it deserves to be.

Gladly none of my family is raised like that, after my generation we all smartened up.

yeah pretty much, even my niece's diet is better than her cousin's though. she'll sit down and eat a salad while he complains if he doesn't get bagel bites or chicken nuggets

it's taught me that I really need to put the work in and give a shit when I finally have kids

Why do you hate personal responsibility so much, ya liberal? It is literally all your fault if being raised in poverty by shit parents fucks you up.

Ah yes, speaking of America. I've worked at an after school nonprofit in Baltimore located right where the unrest was for the last five years. It's definitely opened my eyes in a lot of ways.

In what way?

It's definitely parenting - I think (my wonderfully non-educated view) the biggest problem isn't that you don't teach your kids, but you don't actually do the things yourself. Telling your kids to drink juice instead of soda, while you guzzle down a giant cup of coke at McDonalds isn't gonna help them.
