First off is team building. Even in a tier like NU, there are going to be pokemon that are far more common due to being best in the tier. You need to make sure you have answers to these threats.

The other thing is you also need to learn what movesets you'll encounter as it helps you make better choices when you face them. Usually each pokemon will run between 2 or 3 different movesets and usually they aren't drastically different. Sometimes it might just be someone running a choice set verus a life orb set.

That's actually the best advice for this. You need to learn movesets and work on predicting what you're opponent is gonna do.

Think about your overall game plan more. Don't just go for killing blows all the time. Sometimes it's better to sacrifice one of your pokemon just to do some damage to one of your opponent's pokemon, if that allows one of your own to sweep. Figure out which pokemon are dead weight in the match up against your opponent, and which pokemon can sweep them. Play differently depending on how skilled your opponent is. If your opponent is reading you a lot, try to guess what they think you will do, and play accordingly. If you feel like you're playing well, and still losing, then you just might need a better team.

How I see a lot of "top players" do it is on the team preview they have a plan in mind.

Say you have a scarf pokemon with really good attack. The other team has no priority but has a steelix.

Set up hazards (optional, except not really rocks are broken)

Try to play around them bringing in the steelix and kill the resist. By now there's a pretty good chance the team is softened up.

Tank an attack, and sweep.

My brother and I have won matches in OU with lead Bisharp, defiant boost on the landorus, LO Sucker Punch kills Offensive Lando and sweeps whole teams.

Just an example

Honestly, just play. Play and lose. Learn from your losses. Find out just what exactly is freaking everywhere and tweak your team to counter them. That's what I learned from playing FU, PU, UU, OU, and Ubers throughout the ages.
