As someone who used to IV breed and EV train... I could never do all of that. I mean, I could, but it all sounds so much more tedious than what I'm used to.

Some hilarious notes on tackling Nugget Bridge

STAB Pound does wonders for YCLEF. This is the first time he has seen combat and he's already kicking ass basically. Learns Sing off of his first kill.

SNUK with his perfect Attack DV is indeed a freaking champion. The level 6 ekans takes down a level 14 Weedle single-handedly like it's nothing. Wow.

ROCKO has a high defense and is naturally resistant to almost everything on the bridge, so he just bodies every opponent with ease.

The Lv18 Mankey was actually pretty brutal and was too much for BIRDI to handle. Might be one of the first times one of my Pokemon actually fainted so far this run.

Interesting note about this Rocket guy at the end of the bridge... whenever I played this game as a kid I always wanted to join Team Rocket and wondered why the game wouldn't let you accept his offer. Oh well. By the way, if you didn't know, there's an exploit you can do here to get infinite Nuggets from this guy.

With that I've opened up the next Route and I plan to focus on catching some Oddish and Abra for a while.

yeah, I dunno why I'm enjoying this so much. it definitely seems like something that would be very tedious. to IV Breed Pokemon in later gens you need a Pokemon that has good IVs to begin with though, right? so at some point there must be a step that involves catching a Pokemon with good IVs? I think people use Ditto for this maybe but I'll be honest I don't really know the specifics of later games all that well.

if anyone wants to send me a copy of a current gen game I will gladly catch a bunch of Pokemon and send them to you! :^]

it is pretty funny though that I'm playing the game in a totally different mindset than most people. like rather than clearing each route to unlock the next city so I can tackle the next gym, I'm fighting things so that I can open up additional routes and catch the Pokemon on those routes. only moving onto the next route and doing mandatory battles in order to advance the amount of areas I have available.

Yeah. Using a 5 or 6-IV Ditto with common, competitive natures. It's pretty easy and fast to do, actually.

ditto factory does sound a lot more convenient if your goal is to just produce powerful pokemon quickly, yeah. my "safari" method is more about catching things in the wild and trying to find the most rare specimens that occur naturally.

with the later gen games having a bigger IV range and natures as well to consider though it's probably a lot more rare to find really, really good pokemon in the wild. though I'm assuming that a pokemon that has desirable traits is also good for breeding so there's probably still some value to the "catching" method.

caught a nice little collection of Oddish

ODD(Off Level, Going to wait to analyze him)

QUID
35
21 (+1)
21 (+0)
13 (-1)
26 (+1)

EDDISH
34
20 (+0)
21 (+0)
14 (+0)
25 (+0)

IDD
36
20 (+0)
20 (-1)
15 (+1)
25 (+0)

ADD
37
19 (-1)
21 (+0)
16 (+2)
24 (-1)

If we presume that EDDISH is "balanced", this makes QUID a slow but heavy attacker, while IDD is fast but fragile. ADD attacks quickly but doesn't pack as much punch as the others. Out of those options I actually like the balanced EDDISH the best. A more thorough DV analysis will be needed to say for sure though.

Glancing at ODDs stats, I can honestly say he's almost surely not worth a damn. Despite being a level higher his stat array basically looks the same as these guys.

first thing I'm gonna do is just check EDDISH for his DV values. since he's the moderate option I can basically make a guess at what kind of range the others fall into just based on being higher or lower than he is.

Attack: 7 DV (Average)
Defense: 6 DV (Average)
Speed: 4-5 DV (Below Average)
Special: 2 DV (Very Low)

Huh. So surprisingly this entire array of Oddish came up with pretty low DV Values in the Special category, then. QUID, who seems to be high, is actually just average. While the +0 guys are actually in the Very Low range and ADD probably has a 0.

I'm still going to keep EDDISH overall, but knowing that all of these options are pretty unoptimized actually makes the choice even easier. I only plan to use this thing to catch other Pokemon anyway so yeah. Picking the one with the coolest name seems fine here.

At least it's good to know!

I don't have any capture stuff to report but I have made a bit of progress

EDDISH single handedly wrecked misty's gym, and is climbing very quickly in levels as a result. has his stun spore and sleep powder moves already which will make him a good capture pokemon to use moving forward.

got my SS Anne ticket

and reached the vermillion city!

I guess SS Anne is my next goal though which is fairly boring.

might focus on capturing some pokemon on the nearby routes first. I hear Diglett is prettttyyyy good.

every Diglett I caught was a different level, making a direct quick comparison impossible

DOG lv 15
DAG lv 16
DOUG lv 17
DEG lv 20
IGLET lv 21

I'll just go ahead and do a full DV analysis on each of them. though that is going to take some time. btw if none of these are good I will probably go back and catch some more. Diglett is one of the pokemon that I potentially see myself using through to the end of the game so it may be worth it to catch a nice one.

actually because of having so many to do individually I decided to go ahead and use a DV calculator for this group. don't know if I'll get into the habit of doing this since I actually do like calculating them by hand. but it feels less worth it when I can't eliminate the bottom tier ones through quick eyeballing.

DV Ranges

DOG
HP: mid (4-6)
attack: low (2-4)
defense: low (2-4)
speed: very high (12-14)

DAG
HP: low (3-5)
attack: high (8-10)
defense: mid (4-6)
speed: high (9-11)

DOUG
HP: high (8-10)
attack: very low (1-3)
defense: top (14-15)
speed: mid (5-7)

DEG
HP: very high (13-14)
attack: high (8-9)
defense: mid (5-7)
speed: high (10-12)

IGLET
HP: top (14-15)
attack: high (7-9)
defense: mid (6-8)
speed: mid (5-7)

for what it's worth, DEG definitley has better Special than Iglet as well. considering I need high attack and speed he seems like the best one of the bunch... and just generally a great specimen all around. I think I got pretty lucky to find this quality of a Diglett in my first batch.

by the way... if you don't know how DV works, HP in particular has a very special function. the DV for HP is not actually stored anywhere. it is a calculation of the other DV values, depending on which ones come up as odd numbers. considering that DEG and DAG are similarly statted for example, but DEG has a very high HP DV, this tells us something important. DEG is more likely to have odd values in any given DV category, since those are contributing to his high DV in the HP category.

either way, DEG will be joining the team for now while the others all go off to pasture.
