Plenty of newspapers wrote about the Nazi concentration camps, even before the war. In 1933-34 they were seen as a kind of tough boot camp; by 1938 (especially after the wave of arrests in the wake of Kristallnacht) they gained a reputation in the Western democracies for brutality. But their real horror wasn't known until they were liberated in 1945.

I guess I can understand them not feeling passionate about it if they didn't know the true extent of what Nazi Germany was doing, but WE all know about it. If we could go back in time to fight, then anyone who says no to that is a coward and should feel ashamed.

normally I'd say it's not worth the risk of death, severe injury or psychological trauma, but if I were alive back then I might feel differently.

Anyone who isn't "eligible" could have been used as the front row in the Normandy assault. That way they can serve as cannon fodder while the healthy ones make it through.

I'm very anti-war, but I would have jumped in. Hitler's was an extremely oppressive regime, but he made it obvious by 1939 that he wasn't going to stop. With hindsight knowledge of the holocaust, it slides from a probably to a definitely. My granddad fought in 24th Battalion and was captured at Ruweisat Ridge, and though he died before I was born, I'm proud of the immense personal sacrifice he made.
