with my new camera

My nikon d5500 just arrived and I need practice shooting and being comfortable in public with a camera. I live in a developing suburban area on the edge of Seattle so lots of homeless people, empty roads and housing projects

I will deliver on your requests to the best of my ability fam

well, you couldn't be in a better location for landscape / nature photography if you're willing to travel out of seattle some. seems like there's a lot of great wilderness areas around with olympic national forest & all the national forests to the east.

if you want to practice around seattle try to stay safe and be street smart i guess. if you're from seattle you probably know where it would be a bad idea to pull out an expensive camera while alone already though.

I know, I'm so excited! I'm gonna be heading down to a park tomorrow

Yeah I'm not gonna go parading around the homeless with this thing lol. They already scare me without it :x

anyway i like taking pics of nature. i quite dislike human subjects so i prefer those empty ones, or where human is not the focus, only serve as a backdrop or provide context etc.

i also would like to do a desolate urban photos but it's hard to do because well, urban environment is packed with people. i like post apocalyptic stuff, so urban environment desolate of human life kinda have that kind of feeling to me.

something like this:

i can always find empty abandoned buildings and stuff, but i am too lazy right now haha

Practice wont hurt anyone, and fiddling around with dslr is fun and great when you know the tricks.

Though i agree, the skills of photographer is in their eyes and framing ability. I am still learning, and for real, making a good photo is a hard thing to do.

Plus for me i am too self critical and just think almost all stuff i took are shit.

Anyway some tips:

-take pics from different, unusual angles. The most boring pics are usually those taken at adult head high, basically a normal person pov. Try taking it from below, above or other perspectives that humans usually cant see. Thats why photographer crouch, prone, climb etc. Of course, this isnt set in stone. Sometimes the simplest thing works best depending on the situation.

-emphasis on one thing you wanna show the most and make cthe background compliment it. It is usually better to focus on one thing so viewers eyes dont wander around looking for object of focus. Of course, nothing is set in stone. In landscape or scenery picture a skilled photographer and frame a massive area with no focus that makes viewer feel the grandiose of the scene.

-take LOTS LOTS LOTS of picture. I have talked with professional photographer, in a day they brought like a half dozen of memory cards and tske thousands of pictures in different settings and angles. On average, they took home thousands of pictures and pick like 1% out of the thousands. So yeah. Those amazing pics in gallery or national geographic cover are picked from tens of thousand photos which are almost 99% are shit or not satisfy the photographer or editor.

-learn a basic editing skill. Digital cameras has its limits and even with optimal setting, your pics colors end up kinda bland and washed out. I never really think photos should be overvedited, but i do mess with contrast, color vibrance and white balance. This is especially trur for older model of digital cameras. Newer ones udually have better colors and artifacts if you takr pics in high iso.

-if you want to do night photography, a tripod is a must. It is really challenging bit fun. I myself think i havent took a single good low light photo. Also i lost my tripod in my last trip to thailand lole

Those are really beautiful pictures. Luckily I live right next to those kind of buildings so maybe I can hop the fence and go inside sometime :3

Also thanks for the tips btw, I think I'm going to get Photoshop and Lightroom for photo editing and start bringing my camera along with me everywhere. I want to practice as much as I can
