Is that safe? I love snakes, but a giant python like that and a small child? it's not like snakes are domesticated like dogs or cats, if they're hungry, they're going to eat.

Bigger snakes tend to be more docile since they know not much can hurt them, yeah. And it's fine as long as it's accustomed to people and kept well fed. They normally don't go after people since we smell nothing like what they would eat in nature, unless they're severely hungry or mistreated.

My snakes could easily distinguish between my fingers and food like mice and earthworms 99% of the time.

This. As long as the snake is kept fed and healthy there is really nothing to worry about.

For me that 1% was the rare miss when I used to hand feed mine, lol. Their eyesight is not the best. I stopped doing that. It's not a good idea since it associates hands with food. That big of a snake tells me the parents are not novice snake owners.

Snakes go like a week between meals. Bigger ones like in the GIF go like a month I think. So just get a friend to check on it maybe?

That's the awesomeness of snakes. Once you get a good habitat established they're super low maintenance. And they're happy to chill with you for hours.

You have no fucking clue what you're talking about. That snake is less dangerous than most dogs. It would have to be left alone with the child for a while because pythons (which is what this is, I think it's a bermese python but not sure). Congratulations for looking uneducated.

having spent a lot of time around anxious malamutes i can confirm this

my hands are covered with scars from that time i had to pry open the jaw of a mal that trusted only me that was clamped around the throat of my husky. that trust is the reason i have scars and not missing fingers and a dead pet

bad memories

Taking a step back and thinking about it and reading this topic, I realized my question was pure ignorance on my part lol. It has a lot to do with how snakes eat and how long they digest, which I wasn't even ignorant about, I just...didn't think.

I love snakes, though, I'd just never have one as a pet. I prefer more interactive pets, personally.

Out of my 20 years of keeping pet snakes the number of times I was bitten from aggression or defensiveness was exactly 1, but the snake had a grumpy personality, and was probably wild caught. I've been bitten maybe 5 times total but the rest was me being stupid while feeding them. They got mostly daily handling too.

But nothing in this topic has even semi-convinced you otherwise? On the first part, anyway. The second part I get, which is why earlier I said I'm more into 'interactive' pets, though bond is likely a better word to use.
