To the people who are saying they don't want these people receiving taxpayer housing: What is your alternative solution?

They are causing a problem that is attracting armed rangers. They cannot afford homes of their own. So what exactly do you want them to do if sleeping in public is no longer acceptable? Literally the only place they can sleep is in public.

Don't give a fuck, not my problem. Out of my backyard, that's all I care.

Oh, and has Hawaii considered erecting some defensive architecture?

I just wanna know where exactly these "armed rangers" are meant to put the homeless once they apprehend them. Take them to jail? Tell them to go to a different beach?

We're talking about a demographic who are pretty much screwed for the rest of their lives. Shitty living conditions make it pretty hard to do anything for anyone, I don't care how "good" you think you are.

Some of the people here sound like they're hillbillies tbh. There's a guy around where I live who is homeless, he used to live with his gf in one of the local houses but she apparently died from cancer. And I guess he just broke and couldn't go on, he looks unbelievably vacant and sad, I can hardly look at him most of the time I walk past.

Why don't you guys in the US just label them refugees, put them all in a big ass boat like Noah's Ark and send them to Canada, Australia and the U.K.? Those places are utopia and welcome all, plus they can't say no because they are alway shitting on you for not being as enlightened as them.

Let's get real here. Having these homeless people stink up the beach isn't helping anyone. For the tourists, it's ruining their experience. For the businesses, it's hurting their revenue. For the state/city, it starts to hurt their tax dollars (which means less in social services for these homeless). And for the homeless, it corrals them into a relatively lawless arena that doesn't address their issues.

But we also need to clear about the differences in homelessness, since not all homeless people are the same. There are three general reasons why people are homeless, and the remedy is different in each case.

1. The mentally ill. According to this research, roughly 45% of all homeless people are mentally ill, and 25% are severely mentally ill:
https://mentalillnesspolicy.org/consequences/homeless-mentally-ill.html

For those folks, mindless responses like "give them a home" would be ineffective, since they don't have the skills to maintain it and would possibly even put themselves at danger, not to mention being easy targets for victimization by others. These folks need proper help and attention from the government, and we've collectively done a horrendous job as a country at providing this.

2. People who can't find work due to the economy. These folks need a support system, which should start with their families, first and foremost. Living in squalor on a beach makes it close to impossible to find work. As a secondary solution, these folks would benefit from continued education to acquire new skills. Instead of just arresting them/shuffling them, government officials should provide them with counseling on low-cost or free avenues they can engage in to acquire these skills. Give them the proper tools to help themselves.

3. Able-bodied people who don't want to work. These folks need to fuck off and stop being leeches on society. I have no problem forcibly relocating them somewhere else where they don't inconvenience others.

Fair points. I just want to add that sometimes the mentally ill don't even want to stay in the home you provide. I know a few who straight up just leave when they want, whether it's on foot or by car. It's scary because they won't always let you know, and they might not even be in the right frame of mind to return safely. Why they leave varies. I've seen the ones where it's really just them asserting their independence, but I've heard of others who aren't fully aware of what they're doing. It's a tricky situation.

It's not always the case, but I actually have met several homeless who just chose to give up everything and were tired of dealing with issues at home and went to the street. One guy in particular was still married and I knew his wife and son in town, but he never saw them and didn't appear to have a desire to see them.

How is providing shelter rewarding someone? I dont know about you, but I rather pay rent than live in a half-way home or apartment slum.

I'm not saying go and give the homeless a half a million dollar condo, just provide shelter.

And homelessness is a new age problem. Before massive amounts of land were bought, people could just settle anywhere and build their own homes. Now every part of land you step on is owned by someone.

Just for that reason I believe the government should provide shelter if the person cant afford it.

Why act like you care about those living in the slums? You'd likely tell them to get a better job if they want a safe/nice neighborhood. You are simply using the as a weapon against a group you like even less.

I wouldnt compare a halfway house to living in a shitty apartment.

I mean what solution do you have? Keep them homeless and bothering the public? Put them in jail (aka getting free housing and health care)? Kill them?

Basically what you're saying is "Why eat Burger King when I can get free food at a soup kitchen?"

Why drink out of a facet when I can drink water out of the lake? Why pay taxes when I can live in a boat in international waters? Why have a girlfriend when I have my right hand? Why pay for lobster when I can have free food in jail?

People pay for the faucet. A girlfriend is better than the hand, so you have to WORK for it. People pay for lobsters.

Giving all the homeless shelter would be insanely expensive and impractical. Not only would you have to find, buy land and build houses, but you'd have to pay for electric/gas/water etc as well EVERY MONTH for the 8,000 homeless living in Hawaii right now.

And considering they have no money, there will be no upkeep on the houses in which case they'll deteriorate and be condemned in a short amount of time.
