The average annual salary in the Democratic Republic of the Congo is equivalent to about $500 USD or so, possibly even less now since I read they just faced a big devaluation in their currency, which will makes things harder as they have to import a lot of their food.

Just trying to put things in perspective that there are people in the world making in a year what minimum wage in America makes in less than two weeks.

Irrelevant. "other places have it worse so we shouldn't think of ways to make ourselves better" is a bad argument...

Oh I agree, I just want people to have some perspective when they talk about how much it costs to get by.

Topics like these always bring people out who just seem hooked on defending big businesses and rich people for no discernible reason. Like you probably aren't rich yourself, so why are you so insanely invested in believing that rich people are rich for a good reason and that it's fair?

I'm personally pretty confident that the uber rich don't need to be so uber rich and everybody would still be basically fine, but for some reason this idea triggers some people and I really don't get why.

Don't give a fuck if they can't survive. They'll still be better off than me.

The costs of things there are not the same as the cost of things here. It's a stupid comment on many levels.

Good thing we have purchasing power parity to adjust for that. That gives you maybe $800 USD equivalent at best according to these tables. Though I should point out per capita gdp and average or median income are not the same. The per capita GDP (PPP) will very likely be higher than the actual average or median incomes.

Let mr tell you why it won't work.

The higher wages cost will be pass onto the customers.
The same people that will give death threats if you try to enforce a 10 cent extra sause fee.

For what it's worth, I can understand your irritation, this shit frustrates me to no end as well. It's bad enough that I struggle without a job because there fucking aren't any as-is, but it fucking blows my mind that I would *still* struggle with a job all the same because a bunch of yuppie pieces of shit across the USA live and breath by the mantra of "fuck you got mine".

Not enough lamp posts for all of them.

Let's look at Walmart, in the year 2016:
Net income: $13.64 billion
Number of employees: 2.3 million

If the income goes to $0, Walmart can only afford to give its employees a $2.85/hr raise (at 40 hours a week, 52 weeks a year).

McDonald's:
Net income: $4.686 billion
Number of employees: 375,000

That's $6/hr raise, if the company's income goes to $0.

Once income drop to zero, there will be no Macdonalds/Walmart and everyone will lose their jobs.
