And again, singular they, since the beginning of time, has been used when the exact subject is inexact and/or unknown in number. Even then, it's usually awkward sentence construction that could have been better.

"Each student put on their hat" should have been "The students put on their hats," if "each student put on his hat" is somehow undesirable.

"Chris put on their hat" is just right out. The exact subject is known, and there's only one Chris being mentioned. Use "Chris put on a hat" instead.

They is plural. The clumsiness of that sentence all the argument you need.

I will continue using he, she, him, her, his, and hers.

Anybody has problem with that......deal with it, because I am not changing how I talk to appease people.
