just because one time I was doing or thinking about something while doing another thing. So now lockpicking in Fallout 4 always makes me think about Panera Bread... How does this even happen?

I can relate, playing Vice City alone makes me get a taste of beer in my mouth.

Like, I get Pavlovian Conditioning. But a lot of times there's no reinforcement at all. Just a single instance of two mundane things, and now I can never do one without thinking of the other!

Yeah; I'm that way when I'm mowing the lawn - when I reach a certain area I think of the same totally-unrelated thing.

A generic explanation for this phenomenon? An associative ability our minds have gained that helps/helped us cope with the world.

I was playing battle toads as a kid, and caught a whiff of something my mom was cooking. It smelled awful(some kind of egg dish iirc) and from then on, every time I reach the jet ski portion of battle toads I remember that smell, and vice versa, if I smell something similar it reminds me of the game. lol

Aw man, smells do it too. Back when I was playing through Kingdom Hearts, my mom had a strong-smelling vanilla candle in the house.

This one makes more sense, though. Associating one of the better gaming experiences of my life with a powerful smell.

I do that with games and food, too. The main one for me was Bridge Mixture and Bubsy. I think it fades over time, though. Smells make a lot stronger association, yes.
