I've never watched one of their videos because they've all looked completely ridiculous to me on title alone, but it seems like they're popular enough that I wanna know why. I've seen people cite them like a legitimate basis for making their own theories about games, but I've also seen people laugh at them for making absurd conclusions and overanalyzing things.

Is it more of the former, or the latter? And if it's the latter, is at least tongue-in-cheek making fun of people who overanalyze games, or is it mostly serious?

I think I may have watched a video or two from the channel. Honestly can't remember if I liked it, but it's free, so I suggest you try it out.

The thing is, they're both right. Game Theory does good research and presents some sound arguments....for completely absurd conclusions that are over analyzed.

It's also very uneven, some episodes are more nonsense than others.

Some of mats theories are good, some are bad. He does his homework and they usually seem to have some good solid evidence backing them up, but he even admits his stuff isnt always canon. Mostly they are just fun what ifs for games (and even movies on his film theory channel)

He's been getting worse the longer he goes imo. I think it's because of the massive demand for FNaF for a while made his other stuff suffer.

Huh, well something about the concept of theorizing games bugs me. I guess there's nothing inherently wrong with it, but I hate when people take stuff like that as truth, especially with a big YouTube channel that makes an impression on a lot of people. Like I'll see people use somebody's theories about one game as a basis for their own theories about a different game in the same series, going off the older theory with the implication that it's assumed accurate. I don't know if the Game Theory channel is responsible for proliferating that trend, but I've certainly seem them cited an alarming number of times. It's annoying when I'm just trying to watch some non-theory-related video for Majora's Mask or whatever and there's a bunch of comments about how Link's dead, MatPat brought me here

His own theories can be pretty awful at times iirc.

I just tried watching the Mario Odyssey one and I don't like this. The guy in over the top screechy, the weird radio-like sound effects and popups are distracting, not to mention the first three and a half minutes were an ad.

Seriously I dislike the way this is done. I feel like it'd be so much better if it was just him straight talking while gameplay footage and actual relevant things appeared onscreen instead of trying to be funny by superimposing big eyes into pictures of himself and playing goofy noises for fifteen minutes.

I can't even focus on the content because the presentation was so bad. Ick.

It's a mixed bag I think. I like the idea of the show and some videos are very well done but others are just a mess (e.g. sometimes he'll ignore VERY obvious things that contradict his theory). Plus the host is annoying and the fanbase is kinda terrible. So... yeah...

Like it's been said, he has an obnoxious personality and style and his jokes are awful. But his theories can be interesting and thought provoking if you're into that sort of thing. A lot of "what ifs" and analyzing the implications of what the game's universe provides with the information it gives you.

Probably wouldn't be fun for the people that can't stand to see their precious game canon ruined by outside analysis.

He also has a "Film Theory" channel that analyzes movies and TV shows. I like his analysis of the ending to Breaking Bad.

No, it's pretty awful click-bait nonsense, the videos aren't even funny bad, and he tries way too hard to be funny too. And people saying he 'Does his homework" needs to go watch his video on For Honor which is filled to the brim with incorrect information and biased opinions.

There's also that really cringey thing about him giving Undertale to the Pope.

I liked the Castlevania one. That was one of the only one's I watched, and now a good chunk of his shit is FNaF so idk how his average quality actually is.
