Last winter I was assigned to a team to do some work and we were supposed to meet in a library study room. So I went to the library and I didn't find my team.

It was two guys, one black guy and one arab guy.

So I asked the library lady if they had seen them. I asked about the black guy by name if she had seen him because I didn't know the name of the arab guy.

So when I said his name the lady thought for a moment and asked me if he was "colored." I was like "co... what?" I didn't understand. I thought she might have said "covered" or something. Then she asked "does he have black skin?" I'm like "yeah." So she was like "no, I haven't seen him."

I was like ok.

Well it was true she hadn't seen them because they didn't get there yet, they got there a few minutes later.

But yeah, I felt the library lady's reaction was kind of weird. I mean.... colored?

my buddy Logan from Texas

He doesn't even think it's bad

He'll be like, "Look at that colored boy over there."

And we'll be like, "That's racist."

And he'll say, "Whaaaat? How's that racist? I'm just saying he's colored."

I think its weirder when they call other races colored that aren't black such as South East asians or Middle Eastern people.

When the term "people of color" keeps getting used in media, it implies that similar sounding terms are okay to use (whether it is or not). The librarian likely thought the term was politically correct to use since the other is acceptable.

Sorry, but if the left is going to push for "people of colour" to be acceptable, then you damn well better be ready for "coloured people" to be acceptable too. They're the same damn thing.

Ya but their name is old as hell

And the tone of the conversation with the library lady was super awkward. It felt as if she was telling me that she hadn't seen him because he's black

And anyways when I hear "colored people" or "people of color" it just makes me think of a kid's coloring book

I agree. The awkwardness of another race deciding how another race should be referred to with their skin color as a reference is just as embarrassing as a 60 year old out of date term.

Yea it's awkward. Calling someone black isn't a big deal. I was at work today with a few of my black coworkers and we ended up talking about cowlike hair. I didn't know what that was. They had a hard time explaining it and I couldn't figure it out. They pulled up a picture and I said? "Oh! You mean white people hair! You should have said that earlier" They looked at me saying I said that too loud. I didn't see what the big deal was.

Yeah, well, she wasn't saying she hadn't seen him because he was black. In the time of older people, colored was an acceptable term for black people. My Great Uncle, for example, is one of the kindest people in the world. He always talks about how when he was a kid, he loved playing basketball with the colored boys (in the 50s no less).

There was a period of time where people of African American descent would get mad if you called them black for crying out loud, and like it has been stated in this thread already, if Liberals and Progressives are going to push for "People of Color" to refer to anyone of non-Caucasian descent colored should be an absolutely acceptable term.

Can't we all just call each other people or by name. I mean why should any reference to a person's skin color be given attention unless it's a descriptor with a purpose?

My grandparents referred to them as colored.

Tried to tell them it's OK to say "black" but I guess people only know what they know.
