What a game. The gameplay was improved from the first in spite of the dropped RPG mechanics, the lore and world-building was all still there if you went poking your nose around for it. The missions, even the side-missions, were interesting and kept you moving, wanting to know and see more of the world. Plus, it dropped the squeaky-clean feel of the first game and added some much-needed grit and grime to the world, throwing you in with the heavy-handed Cerberus and letting you get a look at the underbelly of the Mass Effect universe, but it didn't go far enough to be edgy or bleak. A lot of the characters were interesting and the writing was excellent, even if the plot felt like it was a bit on the back-burner this time around, the characters more than made up for it. The dialogue was at worst campy and at best charming, the voicework was excellent, and Garrus and Thane deserve special mentions for being the slickest motherfuckers in space.

The first Mass Effect can't be beat when it comes to the story and lore, and 3 had the best gameplay, but as far as a complete package goes, Mass Effect 2 was the pinnacle. All of the greatness with none of the disappointment.

Andromeda... we don't talk about that. Mass Effect only has three games that I can acknowledge.
