To be fair I don't hear this song as much the past six months, but it was still played so much for a solid 2 or 3 years.

This feels like one of those CE things where people are trying to be cool by hating the song, and then others are trying to one up them in coolness by saying they don't even know the song. When really, all that does is make you look like you never get out of the house or only hang out at gaming stores and stuff.

it's also in commercials, played at fairs and amusement parks, and probably at church functions too

I've definitely never heard that before. I really only go to the grocery store and CVS, outside of smaller local places. No local places play any music, and CVS and Kroger have played the exact same corporate approved tapes over and over. They have the same ones, too. I didn't notice that until I was working in the CVS. Their Summer, Christmas, Halloween and standard CDs are all the same. Most of the stuff on there is 10 years old or more.

And yeah, I don't go to the movies and all of my TV viewing is commercial free. So there's no point in which I would have heard that song. I don't have any friends so the only other music I hear is music I play.

Last time I saw a commercial was around three years ago, last time I went to a fair it was Latino night so Mariachi was big (and live!), last time I went ro an amusement park they had Phil Collins on loop, and no, they pretty much only play Christian music. I also listen to the classic rock and smooth jazz stations (or whatever's on my phone) instead of those "Top 40" stations, and tend to get in and out of grocery stores in ten minites or so.

It's weird that this baffles people.
