Spent no more than 30 minutes there for a check up. My out of pocket responsibility for this is $263.

It was literally cheaper to just pay the doctor cash before I had health insurance, back before the ACA was made law. Back then the same exact visit was $75 to $150 depending on how busy the doctor's schedule was and how long the ear examination took.

Daily reminder that whenever leftists get involved in something, the price will go up and everyone in the middle and lower class will get shafted.

No, you have to call your insurance company and tell them you need to report a case of fraud against your doctor. They have to open a case on it. Just give them any bills and EOBs that are relevant. This is one of the primary functions of an insurance company.

You should work at getting someone on the phone there so you can see if you and the company will be recouping that money. I can't imagine they will let that slide, though sometimes those investigations take a while.

I didn't pay anything out of pocket yet. This is just the medical claim filed with the health insurance company. My portion of it will only have to get paid once the doctor sends me a bill in the mail.

Out of curiosity did you routine visit happen to include any labs or x-rays? That's the only in and out sort of thing I can think of that would cost that much, and it's usually itemized.

Routine visit to a specialist tends to be maybe 250, though that would mostly be for intake (including diagnosis and likely a lab or two) and still itemized properly. Obviously a doctor can charge as much as they want, but there are set standards for cost of care so it's patient responsibility to figure out how much they think their doctor is worth.

The prices are mainly driven up by big pharma and medical equipment suppliers. Most doctors are good people, not cons. But unfortunately conscience is not allowed in the American healthcare system these days. Doctors are billed by the hour by insurance companies to get the job done. The whole system is a fucking wreck.

Insurance responded to my inquiry. They stand by the charges and don't see anything wrong with the cost. The checkup I get is a routine visit for my ear (need to go in for regular follow-ups for the rest of my life due to two surgeries I had when I was a kid). It used to cost just $70-$150 cash depending on how much time I spent there. It skyrocketed in cost starting 4-5 years ago, though.

The insurance was billed around $650 for the debridement part of the check-up and the rest was the office charge. My out of pocket is $263. That's more expensive than before I had health insurance, when I paid with just cash.
