I'm pretty sure the complaints are largely that the trailer doesn't really show that the characters are anything like the characters in the anime/manga. I'm sure there would be less complaints if they decided to go the route of creating a new story with different characters.

That's pretty much as far as their thought process went. You really don't get that I was making a joke specifically phrasing it like that....

Also Death Note is less deep than an episode of Law & Order SVU they really do not talk much about the ethical choices Light makes with his decisions so idk why people are like "omg they are changing my deep philosophical thriller to an action movie!"

people related to the original in a certain way

mostly because even the average person thinks they're super smart and lonely and bored and etc like light was

but anyways,

people related to the original a certain way, the netflix creation is going to have people relate to the characters in a different way.

let's see if it's good

and that's the thing you really shouldn't strive to want to be like Light but when you read YouTube comments of people cheering Light on in the finale it's the biggest cringe lol.

L was white, maybe mixed with Asian, and was made black

Light, his dad, and Misa were Asian, and were made white

and Watari was white, and was made Asian

and to a lot of detractors, only the first case is a problem.

funny how that works out.

i don't think it's cringe, i think it's truly amazing how they managed to achieve that affect.

we just watched a mass murderer from start to finish and it took awhile to notice, but jesus, we actually were rooting for him at some point.

that was my favorite realization of the show tbh.

Except they didn't. If anything they made the main character more realistic to the type of person who would be pulling that kinda crap with the Death Note. The movie is less surreal than the show because they don't have children detectives eating bonbons with anime hair sitting on furniture with their feat sorry.

Also America doesn't have goth Lolita chicks running around so they made it less surreal and went with more American punk rock look.

Yes it does. L even makes note that while Kira is killing criminals, it's wrong to take actions into his own hands. The problem so far is that Light comes off as a total bitch that's motivated by having sex with Misa instead of acting on his superiority complex because he's literally perfect at everything. And L holding public speeches is totally against his character. Nobody ever knew what he looked like outside of the 5 people on the Kira case. The director also hints that L was created by the government and not because he likes to solve crimes for the thrill.

It's not so much that the adaptation needs to be a 1:1, but if you are going to use the same exact characters they should at least have the same personalities as the source material.

no, my complaint was about people complaining about the change to L's race while making no mention to the other characters being different.

they wanna rationalize their complaints about L as straying from the source material, but they come off as being hypocrites when that's one of their biggest complaints.

personally, I'm looking forward to the movie, and I don't mind if it's gonna be its own thing, as long as its good.

every time we see L in public in the trailer, his face is covered.

if there was more time, I could understand them using the fake L, but from what we see in the trailer, it's a fair compromise, IMO.

I didn't think of this till now, but how do you think people would react if the movie ends up having a huge twist where the L we see in the trailer is a fake like how the anime had a stand in L, and he dies like a bitch to Kira like the fake L did in the anime/manga. And then we get the real L, who looks as close to the source material as a normal human being in real life can look (without looking like a cosplay cartoon character)

Though given how out of character and low brow this adaptation is, I don't have any expectations for it and I don't see them playing out the fake L aspect

Its a shame they've bastardized the hell out of the characters, it could of had potential with how good ryuk looks and sounds.

The hilarious and stupid thing about this movie is they make the excuse that they had to change everything for the sake of 'cultural differences'. Uh, probably like 95% of the people that are going to even bother watching this are people that watched the original anime or read the manga. They're not gonna give a shit about cultural differences. What they do care about, like this topic and others have shown, is seeing something that actually does justice to the source material, instead of turning it into westernized garbage.

This movie reminds me of the recent power rangers movie; a complete bastardization of the source material (though PR is a double bastardization since the tv show bastardizes the japanese show), too many things changed for no reason other than to satisfy the director/producer/whoevers ego thats making it cuz they wanna make it 'their way'.

Tbh though live action death note just shouldnt be a thing. They did 2 of them in japan and they both were kinda shitty. The only live action anime adaptation that i've ever seen thats actually amazing is GANTZ and the sequel GANTZ: Perfect Answer (go watch them if you haven't so damn good) and they were made by the japanese.

that certainly can be a redeeming point

it's actually quite hard to mess this up, they just have to follow the japanese film's plot.
