Abyss was pretty great, many people turned off because of the unlikeable cast at first. but they being unlikeable was on purpose so you can see them grow in character.

anyway, this:

Most modern Tales try to follow the Destiny Remake sort of gameplay, so the newer ones pretty much always have a much better gameplay than something like Abyss. I did a fresh playthrough on Hard, and yeah... if you don't grind, you literally do 1 damage to the enemy. There are ways to do more damage, but they'll just get you killed most of the time early on, though later on, you put all of your party on standby and make them spam magic while you have a front liner distract the enemy lul

Graces was supposed to be good....

Battle system was good, but dialogue and story were absolute shit from the get go and never got better. Dgaf to replay it because of this.

Vesperia was also great. Could break the battle system but was still fun, story was pretty solid and dialogue was good for the most part.

Xillia wasn't half bad. Catches a lot of shit but I thought it was a solid game. Not one of the best but still a good game.

Tales of Symphonia was one of my favorites, has aged a bit but actually liked every character and there are only very small flaws you have to go looking for in the story (Zelos' backstory explained at the flanoir scene, stuff like that).

Tales of Phantasia was great but hasn't aged well. Still worth playing.

Abyss, haven't played but on my to do list.

Actually played Phantasia waaaaaay back in the day when it was getting a fan translation for like 5 years.

For the record, I found Abyss's cast to be cringey and the combat to be clunky and un-intuitive compared to the similar Star Ocean series.

berseria and graces f are completely different gameplay-wise, but they're not that good (though they are notably better than abyss, which i couldn't even stomach playing)

Beware of the GBA version, however.
