he's tried taking it to shops to wipe and/or sell it, none of the reputable vendors will touch it. he knows I know how to do it, but I told him it's "impossible" and made up some bs about how it'll wipe itself like an iPhone

you didn't steal it per se, but it's still not yours. I'm not gonna help you hack it or hock it

If he can't work out how to do it using Google then I don't think he should be allowed to have it. Report it to the police.

even if they don't, the IMEI number will be registered somewhere. if the owner reported it as lost or stolen, they might keep an eye out for that number if it pops up again

For the reasons of tracking him down, I'd honestly tell him to hand it in to the cops otherwise he'll be questioned.

Whoopsy.
Since this is derpfaqs I should clarify my entire meaning.

MODS ATTENTION!
Most likely given that the phone has tracking methods in it, from gps to Knox (google that if you can, of course if not, it's a security feature), by "tracking him down", I am stating that should the owner of the electronical communications device contact the police (or perhaps their carrier or simply Samsung themselves), it will be very possible for the person to be tracked down by the local law enforcement and thus being questioned as to why they have a potentially stolen phone.

I AM NOT, I repeat AM NOT stating I intend to track down anyone.
