Yes or no

And what would you buy with it?

just say the $1000 is deposited as a lump sum, after tax, in addition to that fortnights pay

It would make me happy, but I wouldn't spend it, I would save it. And honestly, if your first thought when you are paid is "what shall I spend this on" then you will probably never have much money.

what if you already have a fair amount of savings? not enough to like buy a house but enough where you feel comfortable paying for any reasonable accident

I'd finish my starter emergency fund of $1000. Currently only have $415 in there.

The rest would go to something nice for my wife. Our anniversary is in a few weeks.

it would be nice to have but not enough to make a difference to me. i'm buying a new(used) car soon and have that covered so the 1k would just help toward building my savings back up.

That doesn't change anything. If you already had $40,000 in savings, and one day you suddenly had $41,000, then you could just as easily have spent $1000 of your money before you got the bonus. My point is that you shouldn't go aimlessly looking for things to spend your money on. If you happen to come across something you want, THEN you decide if you should buy it.

Certainly wouldn't change my life or anything like that. There's nothing $1,000 could buy me that I couldn't just buy right now if I really wanted or needed it. That being said I'd certainly appreciate it, but I would more than likely not do anything that I wouldn't normally do.

Not really, it's less than a weeks pay. And after taxes you get like 600-700, would just go to paying extra on student loans

Sure it would be significant but I wouldn't be paying anything off with it either. I've already saved quite a bit as of right now and I can pay my car off at the end of the year.

There is no point in just blindly dumping money into a savings account. You should have a decent "nest egg" set aside and the rest, or what you are comfortable doing, should go into a retirement/investment account. There is nothing wrong with spending any remainder on yourself.

Ugh, come on, I never said there's anything wrong with spending money on yourself. Reread my post and you'll see my problem is with the "gotta spend it" attitude.

Assuming you're making the money, you should have an emergency fund, then put money into retirement accounts, and max them out if you make enough money. Keep some money for yourself and splurge when you feel like it or when you see something you like. The "gotta spend it" attitude is a huge part of why people stay poor. People actually seek out opportunities to spend money.
