He fights with a sword, a staff, and a bow. He jumps and climbs. He rescues damsels in distress and captured friends. He battles a bunch of nameless henchmen soldiers. He acquires currency and other items from defeated foes.

So much of what is commonplace in video games appears in his stories and various film and television adaptations. Why is it so uncommon for him to have a video game? In fact, the only one I can think of is a game on the Colecovision.

Even if people today are more concerned with killing NPCs than heroic quests, he seems like a character who should have had at least a couple of games in the 8-bit and 16-bit eras.

Oh, that's right. I've never played that one, or seen any footage of it, but I think I recall seeing the name listed at one point.

the NES game is criminally underrated. I argue that it's actually the best RPG on the NES

That's a pretty impressive intro for the NES. Liking the music too.

Virgin in general is a pretty underrated company.

There were two on the PC I remember.. one from the 90s called "Conquests of the Longbow" that had really well researched story/lore that also tapped into the politics of the time. More recently, there was a RTS/adventure one where you controlled units with different abilities.. Robin Hood Legend of Sherwood I think
