Wikipedia
Vicarious Visions coined the term "remaster plus" in describing whether the N. Sane Trilogy is a remaster or a remake. They said that they do not consider it a remake, because they did not "fully remake" the original games, but rather used Naughty Dog's original level geometry to rebuild the gameplay from scratch. As the levels were coming together, they also added their own art, animation, and audio.

Source for that term and what it means: https://blog.us.playstation.com/2016/12/03/crash-bandicoot-n-sane-trilogy-first-screens-in-depth-details/

you know what, while we're at it,

whats the difference between a remake and a "reimagining"?

a reboot is when something had a going series and they start over

but it can ALSO be considered a remake and "reimagining", can't it?

I hate this crap

Edited the link in above, but here's Vicarious Visions on exactly what they were doing: https://blog.us.playstation.com/2016/12/03/crash-bandicoot-n-sane-trilogy-first-screens-in-depth-details/

i'd consider lufia 2's DS release also a reimaging because of how drastically different it makes everything. gameplay, dungeons, characters (both design and personality), even certain key events and certain plot points were changed. without being told they were the same game you wouldn't be able to tell.

remasters = basically a step above a port. you've got the source code and material, you're basically tweaking it for a more modern system.

remake = making the game mostly if not entirely from scratch to a more modern style but keeping it the same game. Zero Mission is probably the furthest this line goes. it's you remaking the game that already exists.

reimaging = you looking at the base game and deciding that you want to make this game (mainly its plot and characters) but in a different way entirely.

reboot = starting the series over. doesn't relate to any of the above.

The way I like to look at it is this:

Remaster = Mega Man Legacy Collection
Remake = Mega Man: The Wily Wars
Reimagining = Mega Man: Powered Up!
Reboot = Mega Man Battle Network

Crash PS4 would fall under remake

Wait, how is Battle Network a reboot? Isn't it its own thing -- the start of a separate sub-series?

Tons of characters using the same names. Not just Mega Man but Protoman, Bass, Rush, Roll, Dr. Wily, Zero, and tons of Robot Masters. Also while the original series, X, Zero, and ZX were all in canon with each other, Battle Network is not.

Basically where original/X/Zero/ZX was "everything is robots", Battle Network/Star Force was "everything is programs".

I think a spin off is a bit different from a reboot.

A reboot is a sequel that departs significantly from previous entries, but keeps the name of the series. Crash Trilogy is a remake as far as I can tell. They used existing elements of the PS1 games (level geometry) but recreated just about everything else and made significant gameplay changes.

I kinda understand where they're coming from calling it a remaster.

Because calling it a remake implies significant changes while still being in the same spirit, but they focused on keeping the core of the game the same while touching it up significantly.

So it's somewhere between a remaster and a remake.

It also should be noted that there haven't really been PS1 games remade or remastered outside of the PSP or contemporary versions for other systems (The FF games). The architecture is pretty archaic now, so it can't be as simple as all the PS2 games they've churned out.

FFXII Zodiac Edition on PS4 would be my definition of a remaster. HDifying the assets that were already there also they made changes to how magic works in the game.

REMINDER IT'S OUT IN 11 DAYS
