If you graduate with a degree in computer science and have multiple programming languages on your resume, you'd best be able to write a simple program!! Especially when I allow you to use the language you're most comfortable with, and google after I notice you arent making any progress.

Here's the exercise I came up with: write a program that reads a number (as an argument, from the command line, or from a file... Anywhere as long as the number isn't hard coded into the program) and squares it. That's it.


The first candidate started with php, then gave up and used python and lots of googling.



The second stuck with c++ throughout and at least got more of the structure of the program down before he had to google.
