Doesn't matter if it's 616, Ultimate, the movies, the cartoons or any other zany interpretation of Spider-Man. Again this isn't anything new. Adaptations pretty much always keep established and familiar things while also changing up some stuff to make it fresh or more suitable for the current market. In this case one of the most established things about Spidey is that the love of his life is MJ. It doesn't matter what Peter or MJ we see. This is the constant in every adaptation of Spider-Man. If she wasn't MJ people would be waiting for MJ in a sequel. Because that's who Peter ends up with. Doesn't matter if it's 616, Ultimate, the movies, the cartoons or any other zany interpretation of Spider-Man. Again this isn't anything new. Adaptations pretty much always keep established and familiar things while also changing up some stuff to make it fresh or more suitable for the current market. This will be the second time that the films have rebooted in the last decade, so why not keep it fresh? We don't need the same love interest every time. We had a vanilla MJ in the 2002 - 2007 series. It was smart to substitute "Gwen" for MJ in the 2012 reboot. It's smart to sub in "Michelle" in Homecoming. It would be one thing if they just changed her race or hair color for no reason and kept everything else about her exactly the same. But that's not what they're doing. Maybe they'll throw in a stupid "MJ" wink to the audience at the end, but Michelle sounds like a fundamentally new character.
