No.

A fraction of it is believable.

Nah. It's usually something like 1-5% that actually makes it all the way through the system to the people who need it.

different charities allocate different amounts, but the question is kind of difficult to ask.

when you give money to a charity, some of it goes to overhead costs (around %10-20 for the average charity, but it varies a lot), and then usually the rest of it goes to program costs. so when you give money you're not really investing in the target community, you're paying to fund the programs the charity implements in that community.

so for example suppose you give money to World Vision. WV takes some of the money for overhead, and then usually the rest of it goes to fund their programming. they might use the money to build a well, or train beneficiaries in running their own businesses, whatever.

basically if you want to give money DIRECTLY to people in need, donate using Kiva.

Yeah, it's a felony to defraud the public in the name of a charity. While, I'm sure, there are examples of people that pocket money in the name of charity, they're risking prison time and it's unlikely that practice is widespread.

It's only like 5% that makes it to the actual people that need it.

I think you're confusing charity with government welfare.
Some charities are lousy, some are great.

I don't think about it. If they're running a fake charity or what, it's not on me.

I spent my entire life hearing about charities, sport's athletes charities, government charities, etc. I've lived in a poor neighborhood my entire life and not once was I given any money, able to get any kind of money, was given any kind of after school job or product from a charity, etx.

Unless you count food banks. When I was a kid, my mother and I would shop their for discounted food.
