I've never heard vocals like that and thought "Man, this really enhances the enjoyability of this song compared to if there were normal vocals here." It's a shame because I think a rock or metal band can get away with some degree of mediocre/bad instrumental performances, but bad vocals almost always instantly ruins a song for me, even if the instrumentals are great

Because people like different things.

With names like Death Metal, GrindCore and Thrash Metal it makes sense that the general audience would want to hear sounds like screechy/growl vocals. It is violent and aggressive sounding.

I often wonder how anyone likes this myself, and I tend to enjoy the music surrounding those unfortunate parts, so if I can't wrap my head around it there's not much hope for the majority. I put that form of "singing" behind Rebecca Black's "Friday".

I'm not a fan of death metal or the like. My brothers housemate is a real big fan of deathcore. I like to actually understand the lyrics though. With that said Slipknot are my favourite band and I like a few bands with "growly vocals". It does get my blood flowing so perhaps to some degree I see the appeal.

...such as this. This one just sucks ass all around, instrumentals and vocals. But at least it gets to the point quickly, letting me know early on how shitty it is. The worst is when I hear a song for the first time from a band I don't know anything about and it's got a nice instrumental intro going on but then two minutes in I get hit with the Cookie Monster

This isn't something that anyone can offer up a technical explanation for you. People have different ears and look for different things in their music. A lot of metal attempts to evoke themes of violence and aggression.
