You have to remember that the Supreme Court was intended as a check on Congress and the President, much like the other branches are checks on each other and the Supreme Court. However, the Supreme Court is the only branch which doesn't rely on being elected. This allows them to not have to worry about voter perception, which in theory allows them to be more objective, even when that objectivity is unpopular.

They also provide a measure of stability to the government in that the Supreme Court doesn't change much from year to year.
